BETWEEN TWO WORLDS: THE THOUGHTFUL PHOTOGRAPHY OF MANDY SHAM
Some photographers chase moments. Others chase places. Mandy Sham is searching for something deeper. The Toronto-based travel and documentary photographer has built a body of work that feels less concerned with documenting the world than understanding it. Her photographs are filled with atmosphere, movement, and emotion, but beneath the visual beauty lies a quieter pursuit: the desire to connect—with people, with places, and with the often-overlooked experiences that bind us together.
That perspective may stem from the fact that Sham has spent much of her life between two very different worlds. "So I grew up in Toronto and Hong Kong. Those are two home cities for me, and they're very contrasting, very different cities." Growing up in suburban Toronto offered one experience; Hong Kong offered another entirely. "I grew up in the suburbs here where it was quiet, and I think within that I was looking for a lot of chaos on an artistic level. And in Hong Kong it was just sensory overload, information overload." Rather than pulling her in opposite directions, those contrasting environments helped shape the way she sees. Between stillness and movement, familiarity and discovery, she found the foundations of both her imagination and her creative identity.
Photography entered her life through family. Her father was an amateur photographer who documented everyday moments, but the medium did not immediately present itself as a career path. That changed when he gifted her a camera before a trip to Hong Kong when she was sixteen years old. "It was really cheap mirrorless camera, and at the time it was just meant to document my travels there and my experience." She paired those images with stories on a personal blog. Gradually, a portfolio began to emerge. What started as a simple exercise in documenting everyday life became something much more meaningful.
For Sham, photography evolved into a way of exploring questions that had always interested her. Questions about people, belonging, memory, and the spaces we inhabit. "I think the stories that I am most compelled to tell have to do with people, and the way they connect to each other, and also the spaces they inhabit." That idea runs through nearly all of her work. Even when people are absent from the frame, their presence can still be felt. A landscape, a city street, a piece of architecture—each becomes a reflection of the individuals and cultures that shaped it. "What do they say about humanity overall? What do they say about societies or cultures around the world? That's always what I've been most drawn to."
Her photographs often carry a cinematic quality, and the influence of film is impossible to miss. Before photography became central to her life, cinema was her first visual language. She immersed herself in movies, studied film, and developed an appreciation for directors whose work balanced emotion with visual storytelling. "I grew up watching a lot of movies. That was probably my first introduction into the visual world." The influence of filmmakers like Stanley Kubrick and Wong Kar-wai continues to resonate in her images today. They are photographs that often feel like fragments of a larger narrative, as though the viewer has stepped into a story already in progress. "I think that is the kind of sentiment I want to inject into my photography, is to create the sense that it's a moving image, or at least a sense that even though it's a still frame, it invites the sense of chaos or movement within the image."
Yet despite the cinematic quality of her work, Sham's approach remains deeply personal. She speaks frequently about photography not as a means of recording reality, but as a way of interpreting it. "I'm always trying to show people how I see the world and not just what the world is on an external level." That distinction is important to her. Rather than pursuing objectivity, she embraces the idea that every photograph is inherently shaped by the person behind the camera. "I think truth and interpretation of reality are actually kind of the same thing, in that everything that is our interpretation of reality is our truth."
This philosophy extends beyond photography itself and into the way she experiences the world. For Sham, the camera is not simply a tool for making pictures. It is a way of participating. "The camera is a tool, but it's also kind of the gateway or the door into actually engaging with the world." Whether she is traveling abroad or photographing closer to home, meaningful images begin with meaningful interactions. Human connection is not a byproduct of her process—it is the foundation of it. "Human connection is very important, if not essential, to being able to capture those photographs." Travel photography, in particular, has taught her the value of openness. The strongest images often emerge not from observation alone, but from conversation, trust, and vulnerability. "I think they've really been able to feed into each other," she says of her ability to connect with people and create photographs simultaneously.
In an era dominated by algorithms, social media metrics, and endless scrolling, Sham's perspective feels refreshingly grounded. She views photography as a practice of presence rather than production. "I've always been a long time fan of this idea that the art is a meditation, and it's you relating to yourself and your inner world." That idea also shapes how she thinks about photographic prints. While digital images can disappear into an endless stream of content, a print creates a different kind of relationship. "I think prints are a reminder of the relationship specifically between that moment that's being captured and the person who is observing it." A photograph on a wall asks something of the viewer. It invites them to slow down, to revisit, to reflect. Much like the experience of standing in front of a painting in a museum, a print creates space for contemplation.
At the heart of Sham's work is a belief that photography can bring people closer together. Not by erasing differences, but by revealing the humanity that exists within them. "What photography has taught me is that we are definitely more alike than we know." It is a simple observation, yet one that feels increasingly relevant. Through her photographs, Mandy Sham invites viewers to step beyond assumptions, beyond geography, and beyond the speed of modern life itself. In doing so, she reminds us that the world is not only something to be seen—it is something to be experienced, understood, and shared.
