We drove down to Assateague Island, Maryland this past Friday. I was able to capture these images of the wild horses that have been roaming this barrier island for the past 350 years with an uncertain origin - with one folklore explanation being that their ancestors survived a shipwreck off the coast of Virginia in the late 17th century.
A more practical explanation is that they are descendants of horses that were brought to barrier islands in the late 17th century from the mainland to avoid taxation of livestock.
During the Summer they are often seen on the beach to escape the inland mosquitos.
I have been to Assateague Island many times but have yet to outgrow the excitement and enthusiasm of a child seeing the wild horses for the first time.
Staying young at heart…………….
