After studying the physics behind cameras in college, I started getting interested in photography when I started hiking. Developing my artistic skill has been a rewarding venture, and enabled me to get a number of my photographs into art galleries and curated art shows, including having one of my photographs from Patagonia selected for a print exhibition in the Louvre. As I transitioned from film to digital, I also became curious about motion pictures, and ended up making a promotional video for a TEDx conference, an experience that got me hooked on cinematography. Since then I have shot over 40 short films and two feature films. Some of those have gotten festival awards, including Best Short, Best Director, and a nomination for Best Picture. One afternoon in autumn I decided to for a short hike in an old growth forest in Rockport State Park in Washington state. It was a cloudy, dreary afternoon with rain in the forecast, so I thought it was a good time to explore the forest and take advantage of the canopy to stay out of the worst of the rain while still being outdoors. The forest was serene and the canopy did indeed keep most of the rain off of, though of course some filtered through to the trail. The sound of the raindrops added some acoustic texture to the quiet, somber atmosphere making for a relaxing outing. The rain also created a photo opportunity that I nearly missed because it was so small, being a single drop of water on a bit of old man's beard lichen. Because it was an old growth forest the lichen was fairly high above the trail making it a bit of a challenge to shoot so it took a few tries.
