After studying the physics behind cameras in college, I started getting interested in photography when I started hiking. Developing my artistic skill has been a rewarding venture, and enabled me to get a number of my photographs into art galleries and curated art shows, including having one of my photographs from Patagonia selected for a print exhibition in the Louvre. As I transitioned from film to digital, I also became curious about motion pictures, and ended up making a promotional video for a TEDx conference, an experience that got me hooked on cinematography. Since then I have shot over 40 short films and two feature films. Some of those have gotten festival awards, including Best Short, Best Director, and a nomination for Best Picture. Camping in the core Enchantment is challenging, starting with the difficulty in getting a permit. The next challenge is getting there; the two primary routes are tough. One is 10 miles long, the other is only six, but both have over four thousand feet of elevation gain. We entered via Colchuck Lake and Asgard Pass, hiking four miles to Colchuck, scrambling across the boulder field, and then hiked up the steep 2200 foot escarpment to the pass. We had three nights there, and for our third we stayed near Isolation Lake, right on the beach. While photographing the predawn and magic hour light before eating breakfast and decamping, I saw this larch catch the sun as it passed a notch in the ridge to the east, creating this beautiful play of light and shadow, but also highlighting the hardiness of the pioneering larches. They grow in these harsh environments where there is very little competition from other trees, because few trees can grow in such climates. The growing season is short, the winds intense, and the soil when there is any is shallow. Yet the larches manage to not only eke out a living here, but actually thrive.
