After studying the physics behind cameras in college, I started getting interested in photography when I started hiking. Developing my artistic skill has been a rewarding venture, and enabled me to get a number of my photographs into art galleries and curated art shows, including having one of my photographs from Patagonia selected for a print exhibition in the Louvre. As I transitioned from film to digital, I also became curious about motion pictures, and ended up making a promotional video for a TEDx conference, an experience that got me hooked on cinematography. Since then I have shot over 40 short films and two feature films. Some of those have gotten festival awards, including Best Short, Best Director, and a nomination for Best Picture. ABOUT THIS ARTWORK: ETHEREAL
In winter, both Wrangell Island snow geese and bald eagles fly south. There are some areas in Washington's Skagit Valley where both types of birds spend their winters, and one of those areas is called Fir Island. There are wildlife sanctuaries for the snow geese, and local farmers have contracts to plant seeds specifically for the snow geese. Hunting is permitted in other areas of Fir Island, but not in the sanctuaries. The bald eagles visit the Skagit Valley for the salmon. They fish the Skagit in January when the salmon fry are making their way toward the estuaries where the Skagit flows into Rosario Strait near Anacortes and the San Juan Islands. Bald eagles are most active early in the morning as the sun rises, and later in the day near sunset, while the snow geese rest in open water at night and fly in huge flocks to various feeding grounds during the day. One chilly winter morning I woke up extra early and got ready to head up to Fir Island, my route for the day planned out with the aim of catching some bald eagles at dawn, then seeking snow geese. Prepared with my dSLR and a 1000mm lens, I timed it out well, reaching the Wiley Slough area, known for bald eagle sightings, just as the civil twilight was fading into dawn. But it was socked in with fog so dense that I couldn't see the bald eagles unless they flew directly overhead, and even then only if they stayed low. Eagle photography wasn't going to happen. My usual fallback of landscapes wasn't looking likely either due to the low visibility. As the sky started to lighten however, I started being able to see the reeds and their reflections in the calm water. Because the trees had shed their leaves for the winter, their structures were becoming visible as shadows in the backlit fog, and the reflections of the reeds was creating some surprisingly pretty abstract patterns. I tried a few compositions before find and settling on this nearly symmetrical image, where the foggy shadows of the trees behind the graceful, abstract reed patterns created a feeling of ethereal and unexpected beauty.
