ABOUT THIS ARTWORK: THE HEALER
This artwork started out as a live painting at a crystal and book shop. I painted it in a bright lit sunny room with a large window facing a busy city street. The spark for the Healer came in the form of a vintage postcard which featured a performer in the Ukrainian Harvest Dance. I remember it vividly sitting on the counter, drenched by sunlight in the local coffee shop haunt. I looked at the postcard and almost immediately a clear vision came to me. Sometimes that’s how it works. I also draw from the environment the work is made in and the things I am interested in at the time of making. At the time I was interested in plants and plant medicine and also had friends who were pretty immersed in it as well. This influenced the head dress especially. Memories and life experience often find their way into certain artworks. In this case there is reference to the ocean and the Hawaiian islands of Maui and Big Island. The decision to go with a square birchwood canvas comes from a series of paintings I had previously made featuring the Tibetan Tara deity. That whole series was square, it represents a celestial place, the earth, stableness, balance, and is the place where the deity lives. For the Healer I decided to move her slightly out of balance in the composition. A large number of my paintings, including this one, are not structured by gridlines. Instead I try to find a balance through the process of painting and making decisions and mistakes as I go. Mistakes often lead to new ideas and therefore I see them as new possibilities. I do believe this is a lot like life as well. So this painting reveals both personal memories, and also universal themes. It is not meant to be figured out all at once, it has a slight mystery to it, and this is what I like about it. Over time the story develops and allows the viewer to reflect on their own life and experience.
