I am a former Guantanamo detainee. I am not a professional artist and art was never my specialty, and it was never 'my thing' or my path.
?I only started painting because the place was an exceptional and significant location—a prison of unique importance and value. I engaged in this work solely to document that rare place.
Therefore, I made sure to collect raw materials directly from the ground of the detention center itself, such as soil and stones which I made into necklaces. I also gathered materials from the camp, including pieces of the green fence that you see in the news surrounds the Camp. I also used the detainees' bedsheets as canvas to paint on.
As for getting these items out of the detention center, it was a struggle of its own— a battle I took the risk to fight.
Every piece of the artwork I brought out bears the official U.S. Forces stamp and a unique tracking number.
Furthermore, I have official legal attestations from my lawyers witnessing that I brought these items out and confirming they are authentic works from Guantanamo.
