After studying the physics behind cameras in college, I started getting interested in photography when I started hiking. Developing my artistic skill has been a rewarding venture, and enabled me to get a number of my photographs into art galleries and curated art shows, including having one of my photographs from Patagonia selected for a print exhibition in the Louvre. As I transitioned from film to digital, I also became curious about motion pictures, and ended up making a promotional video for a TEDx conference, an experience that got me hooked on cinematography. Since then I have shot over 40 short films and two feature films. Some of those have gotten festival awards, including Best Short, Best Director, and a nomination for Best Picture. ABOUT THIS ARTWORK: BAD PENNY
We met up in Vancouver and drove out to Valemount, a nine hour trip across British Columbia. From there we took a helicopter 70Km across the mountains to the Mallard Mountain Lodge, nestled in a pristine valley near the border of Jasper National Park. The lodge is mostly off-grid, the only connection to the outside world being the satellite for internet. The proprietors being their supplies and staff in via helicopter, including the chef. Electricity comes from solar panels with batteries to store energy and a generator as a backup. During our stay we went hiking around the Mallard Valley. The property includes five valleys, but usually the guides get to them on skis in winter, because walking there takes long enough to require multi-day trips. Instead we went on a variety of hikes around the valley and to the ridges around it. This waterfall is one that we passed several times, because it is on the way to several of our hikes. The light was too harsh the first time we passed it, so I kept it in mind for later, but the rain that afternoon did not work for the shot since it obscured the summit of the mountain Bad Penny in the background. The third time we passed it on the way out it looked wonderful, so on the way back to the lodge we stopped there so that I could get a shot when the waterfall itself was in soft light.
