Hi, I am an astrophotographer and landscape photographer based in the UK. I create images of deep space objects captured with a telescope and specialised camera from my garden. These can take many 10s of hours of stacked long exposures to bring out the detail and colour of the nebulae and galaxies in our night sky.

ABOUT THIS ARTWORK: CALIFORNIA NEBULA
The image is of the California Nebula, imaged by myself from my home in the UK. The California Nebula, having official designation Sh2-220, is a large emission nebula in the Perseus constellation, about 1000 light years distant and about 100 light years long. The hydrogen and oxygen gases that the nebula is comprised of are ionised by the bright blue star Xi Persei observed near the nebula. To capture the faint details of the nebula requires a telescope with specialised camera, equatorial mount to track the rotation of the earth and a separate guiding camera to accurately control the pointing of the telescope during the long exposures required to capture the details of the nebula. Many of these long-exposure images are stacked to increase the signal to noise ratio and reveal the colour and detail. Because this nebula is so large, 4 overlapping stacks of images were required to create a mosaic covering the entire area. This image was created using 135 exposures of 20 minute duration for a total of 45 hours of exposure. The resulting high-resolution image is 80Mpixels. The imaging equipment used is a Skywatcher Esprit 100ED Pro Telescope, a ZWO ASI2600MC Pro astro-camera, cooled to -20C on a Skywatcher EQ6-R Pro equatorial mount.
