A.P.Polo - "Ei des Kolumbus" - Hamburg (Germany) - New Media Art. Colourful, abstract, contemporary work that combines the contrasting geometric shapes of the egg and a multitude of rectangles, creating different spaces within the work through the use of colour combined with the skilful use of light & shadow. The egg of Columbus ("Ei des Kolumbus in German) is a saying that describes an amazingly simple solution to a seemingly unsolvable problem. The Gordian knot has a similar meaning. The origin of the saying is said to be based on an anecdote that is told roughly like this: Christopher Columbus, on his return from America, is told during a dinner with Cardinal Mendoza in 1493 that it was easy to discover the "New World", and that anyone else could have done so. Columbus then asks the people present to place a boiled egg on the top. Many attempts are made, but no one manages to accomplish this task. It is finally convinced that this is an impossible task and Columbus is asked to try it himself. Columbus hits his egg with the tip on the table so that the tip is slightly pressed in and the egg stops. When those present protested that they could have done it, Columbus replied: "The difference, gentlemen, is that you could have done it, whereas I did!" Originally, the anecdote about the Egg of Columbus was coined by the Italian artist Giorgio Vasari (1511-1574) for his compatriot Filippo Brunelleschi (1377-1446). It is said that this master builder, by solving the "egg problem", was commissioned to build the dome of the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore. This would make the anecdote fitting, in any case, since the dome of the cathedral in Florence is apparently reminiscent of the shape of an egg that has been pushed open at the top. The connection with Columbus goes back to Girolamo Benzoni, who tells the anecdote in the version of Columbus in his book on the history of the New World (Historia del mondo nuovo, Venice 1565), although he admits that he knew the story only from hearsay. In South America, a version is common in which Columbus did not press the egg into the ground, but put it in heaped up salt. Although common in many European languages, the phrase seems to be unknown or at least not widely used in English.
