ABOUT THIS ARTWORK: DISTANT RECTANGLE
You step into a gallery that is also a corridor and the air tastes of dust and old lacquer. The passage stretches away in a strict unforgiving perspective — a vanishing point that pulls the eye like a rope into a distant sunlit rectangle. On both sides the walls are not plaster and wallpaper but rows upon rows of painted panels each one a square or a small portrait framed by narrow bands of darker pigment. Faces stare out from the panels: men and women young and old their expressions caught somewhere between memory and mask. None of them moves but their gazes form a chorus that follows you as you walk a thousand quiet conversations braided into the grain of the wood. The paint is layered and lived-in you see the brushstrokes the hairlines of craquelure the palimpsest of touch-ups and faded pigments. Blues have gone to pewter ochres have sunk into amber greens breathe like moss in the shadowed crevices. The panels are not arranged as museum-casualties but like shelves of an archive—each face a record each square a ledger of a life weathered by time. At intervals the faces give way to abstract squares and rectangles carpets of color that break the rhythm and somehow deepen it as if the artist intended silence as well as speech. Above the ceiling mirrors the corridor’s solemn geometry but where the walls hold private portraits the ceiling carries a single larger face — a woman painted with a careful patient hand. She is not monumental in the heroic sense she presides gently like a memory draped across the overhead beam watching the corridor’s slow procession. Her eyes do not judge they anchor. Underfoot the floor is a worn tapestry of rectangular rugs painted into the wood their edges smoothed by centuries of imagined footsteps. Light filters down through the far opening a pale almost clinical blue that renders every shadow as a statement. There is a rhythm here: face face face rectilinear pause another face. It feels less like a static exhibition and more like a ledger of arrivals and departures a long patient ledger sewn along both walls. The further you walk the smaller the portraits become until the faces collapse into a pattern of color and repetition and the corridor becomes a promise of continuity — or of confinement. Each portrait is intimate yet anonymous: a suggestion of life a whisper of story an invitation to invent what each pair of painted eyes has seen. The overall tone is both reverent and uncanny. The painting does not ask to be deciphered it asks to be inhabited. You could imagine sitting in that long hall for hours letting the portraits silent histories unspool into your own. Or you could turn back at once feeling the weight of a thousand unspoken names pressing against the skin of the air. Either way the corridor holds you — a long patient mouth of perspective that swallows sight and exhales a slow persistent ache for what is known and what must remain only painted memory.
