MODE'S EYE

I'm a freelance photographer based in Inver Grove Heights, Minnesota, following a long career as a staff shooter and reporter for The Des Moines Register in Iowa. I'm told that my photography has a strong point of view. As a finalist for a Pulitzer Prize in the feature photography category, jurors called my work "unusual." I took that as a compliment. Twice I was awarded runner-up honors for National Newspaper Photographer of the Year.

Recently, one of my black and white photo sequences was accepted for exhibition by the Center for Fine Art Photography in Fort Collins, Colorado. But as you will see in my gallery, I like shooting diverse subjects — like ... dogs "driving" a pickup truck, Buddy Holly's lost eyeglasses, a napkin lipstick kiss, a pope, five U.S. presidents ... Mick Jagger. My freelance work has been published in The New York Times, Washington Post, Sunday Chicago Tribune Travel, People, Successful Farming, Columbia Journalism Review and other national publications. It also has been exhibited at Grand View University and Luther College as well as permanently displayed at the Old Rossville Store supper club in northeast Iowa.

These days I'm at home shooting life and landscapes in the Upper Mississippi River Valley, posting regularly on Facebook as "DriftlessMode."
