ABOUT THIS ARTWORK: SWAN FIGHTER
When my goddaughter was little, I noticed how quickly she learned and mimicked the adults around her. I remembered what the child psychologist, Dr. Jean Piaget said about a child's effortless ability to absorb information and design their life. What they learned as children would be an integral part of their beliefs for the rest of their lives. I helped my friends raise their child. I was adopted into their nuclear family as a kind of uncle. I chose the title of "godfather," the one who helps the child be mentally safe and happy. I realized that I could help her achieve lifelong happiness. But in order to do so, she would have to learn how to speak for herself and then enforce her truth so that others did not take her power from her. She was growing up in a male-dominated society in which all women were considered second-class citizens. Unless she took control of her life, she would always bow down to the decisions of men in business and home life. For instance, as a normal young woman, my mom wasn't permitted to open her own bank account without the signature of her husband. Even though our society has become more equitably intelligent toward women, I also knew then that in the street, a woman was considered a weaker person. I understood that if a man wanted to grab her, she would have to learn the art of stopping that man. This would require training. We call this the art of self-defense. My favorite word for this training is Kung Fu. Back to Dr. Piaget. If a child will formulate whatever beliefs they are spoon-fed, then I deemed it necessary to tell my goddaughter that she was as smart and as strong as any boy. And then I did more. I took her and her friends to my school's martial arts children's classes for several years. Did it work? When she was a young woman teenager, I learned that she and her friends would have random fierce wrestling matches in their backyard. I asked one of her male buddies if he felt my goddaughter could hold her own in a match against any of her male friends. Her male buddies were strong. He laughed and shook his head, stating that she was always the winner. That is what I hoped for. As a young woman and now a mature adult, she is a force of nature. She is generous and kind, and should any creep attempt to force himself on her; he will get very hurt. That memory of pain will live in his body and will be a lesson to him for all the days of his life. What will be the lesson? Don't mess with women. Historically, in my Germanic ancestor's forest tribes, before the patriarchal Romans invaded, women were encouraged to rise through military ranks as any man would. My goddaughter has her ancient pre-roman ancestors' fearlessness. And this is common sense. A mother lioness will fight to the death to protect her cubs. The mother swan will use every part of her powerful body to intimidate a predatory from devouring her chicks. It is my belief that every girl child should be taught how to be in control of her body and her home. No predator should be allowed to cross that line. I am certain that parents who don't prepare a girl child to learn how to speak their truth and support their truth with martial arts skills are leaving their girl children vulnerable. This drawing is a tribute to mothers and sisters, daughters and goddaughters and nieces who have learned how to protect. Please, go learn the martial arts. Don't be vulnerable. Take control of your life.
