ABOUT THIS ARTWORK: CHECKERBOARD MESA
This image shows Checkerboard Mesa in Zion National Park Utah which displays an unusual crack pattern in the sandstone hills that resemble a grid much like you would see on a checkerboard. The distinct, even vertical joint pattern is perpendicular to the bedding in the Navajo Sandstone. A pinyon pine-juniper-ponderosa pine forest is in the foreground. There are several pull outs along the highway we travelled and trailheads that lead into some of the Zion backcountry. This image was taken in 2004 on a road trip to the Southwest.
