"Photography is telling a story in a thousandth of a second" This phrase has always been for me a kind of motto to go in search of the next photographic story. I was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina and in 2006 I settled in the city of Campeche. My beginnings in photography go back to 1990, year in which I took a basic photography course in the Academy of Visual Arts of Buenos Aires and from there all my training has been eminently self-taught. My lens portrays a wide variety of subjects, but where I am most comfortable is producing nature photography, since from a very young age I was attracted to the natural world and its inhabitants. I am an active member of NANPA (North American Nature Photography Association) and OAS (Ocean Artists Society) and ambassador of the “Great Mayan Aquifer” project and "Nature First" organization. My work has been published in various publications and exhibited in different samples. I´ve participated in photography competitions locally, nationally and internationally, in which I´ve been awarded several mentions. My personal mission when I am behind the camera, is to create evocative and attractive images that capture in the public the interest in the natural aspects of our planet, the beings that inhabit them and the risks in which they are, and from that generate awareness about the importance of the conservation of the planet.

ABOUT THIS ARTWORK: SUNSET IN SOLITUDE
My name is Gustavo Costa, I am a professional photographer and my favorite subject to photograph is nature in all its forms and expressions, whether doing landscape photography, wildlife photography, underwater, macro, etc. No matter what subject I have in front of my camera, I am the happiest man in the world when I am in the natural world. In the Yucatan Peninsula every year huge numbers of flamingos congregate to breed and procreate. So I decided to go and photograph them and try to create an artistic image of this iconic species of the mangroves and marshes. Finding subjects to photograph was not difficult, the flamingos congregate in their thousands! That, paradoxically, is the biggest complication. The fact that there are so many individuals together makes it difficult to find a simple composition that best conveys the message to the viewer. Knowing this possible difficulty I decided to strategically plan my photo shoot. For this I hired a local guide who took me with his boat to the outer sectors of the colony, where the flamingos are more likely to feed away from the group. We also decided that, to better achieve the effect I was looking for, we would go out late in the afternoon so that the position of the sun would be closer to the horizon, which facilitates the formation of silhouettes. The day was ideal, a magnificent day of sunshine and calmness presaged a good photographic session. I took advantage of the day to capture various species of birds, such as white pelicans, ospreys, herons and others that usually populate the aquatic environments, we were even able to observe and photograph a couple of crocodiles, which reminded us how well we were doing staying in the boat, even though the sweltering heat invited us to cool off in the water. After going through the labyrinthine arms of the mangrove swamp, we found a fairly large colony of flamingos, which announced their presence from afar with their songs and calls. We turned off the boat's engine and by dint of rowing we managed to stop at such a distance that we could clearly perceive the strong smell of guano coming from the nests. In these circumstances we must move very slowly and deliberately. A quick movement or strange noise could frighten the colony and unleash a stampede of birds, with undesirable consequences. The location turned out to be perfect and we decided to return at dusk to try the shot I was looking for. We stopped to rest and have a delicious shrimp ceviche lunch that my guide's wife had prepared for us under the cool shade provided by a huge tree by the river. Besides the food, I was already savoring the concrete possibility of getting the photo I was looking for. Now it was just time to wait patiently for the sun to set. Around five o'clock in the afternoon, with our energies replenished and our expectations high, we set off back to the place we had determined to be the best. However, my enthusiasm crumbled after a few minutes. The tide had dropped substantially and due to the draft of the boat, the area we had identified as the best could no longer be accessed. The boatman suggested that I check a relatively nearby site, which might have the same characteristics. With no other option, we decided to try our luck and began to navigate to the new site, while I watched worriedly as the sun quickly dropped in search of the horizon. Twenty minutes later we turned into a branch of the river where a group of flamingos could be seen in the distance, but we encountered the same problem, the shallow water prevented the boat from passing. On my tongue I began to feel the bitter taste of defeat. At that moment, the boatman suggested that I walk to get closer to the group of birds. The water there was about 40 centimeters deep, but the memory of the crocodiles we had seen during the morning was still fresh in my mind. Faced with my fear, the boatman offered to accompany me armed with a stick, to defend me in case a crocodile appeared. Despite my fear, I decided to give it a try and we walked in knee-deep water for about 50 meters. From that point, and through the lens of my camera, I could see how a flamingo began to walk, separating from the group. The right moment presented itself. Avoiding getting the camera wet, I crouched down slightly and took several shots, cropping the individual against the colorful background. Despite the setbacks I was able to get an image fairly close to what I was looking for. Looking up and seeing the image on the camera's LCD I was satisfied and we quickly made our way back to the boat before running out of light. As we sailed meekly back to town illuminated by the stars that were beginning to shine in the early evening I felt a warm sense of accomplishment and gratitude. Each photo gives me incredible moments and teaches me lessons that last a lifetime.
