"Photography is telling a story in a thousandth of a second" This phrase has always been for me a kind of motto to go in search of the next photographic story. I was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina and in 2006 I settled in the city of Campeche. My beginnings in photography go back to 1990, year in which I took a basic photography course in the Academy of Visual Arts of Buenos Aires and from there all my training has been eminently self-taught. My lens portrays a wide variety of subjects, but where I am most comfortable is producing nature photography, since from a very young age I was attracted to the natural world and its inhabitants. I am an active member of NANPA (North American Nature Photography Association) and OAS (Ocean Artists Society) and ambassador of the “Great Mayan Aquifer” project and "Nature First" organization. My work has been published in various publications and exhibited in different samples. I´ve participated in photography competitions locally, nationally and internationally, in which I´ve been awarded several mentions. My personal mission when I am behind the camera, is to create evocative and attractive images that capture in the public the interest in the natural aspects of our planet, the beings that inhabit them and the risks in which they are, and from that generate awareness about the importance of the conservation of the planet.

ABOUT THIS ARTWORK: THREE ELEMENTS
My name is Gustavo Costa, I am a professional photographer and my favorite subject to photograph is nature in all its forms and expressions, whether doing landscape photography, wildlife photography, underwater, macro, etc. No matter what subject I have in front of my camera, I am the happiest man in the world when I am in the natural world. Although I was born in Argentina, I currently reside in Campeche, in the Yucatan Peninsula. It is a fantastic territory, where nature is still alive and overflowing, and an example of this is the Manantiales de Pedro Baranda. I got to know this place by pure chance as a result of a job I was assigned to do very close to this site. At the end of my work, the person who hired me for that job took me to visit this place unknown to me. I was not very enthusiastic about going at the time, since I still had to return to my hometown, which is about 250 kilometers away, and I did not like the idea of driving at night, but I agreed to go anyway. My employer was very enthusiastic about showing me around and I didn't want to disappoint him. After 30 minutes on a country road we arrived at the site. It is a group of springs of absolutely crystal clear water that form an extensive marshland, where different species of aquatic plants grow and it is home to a huge number of birds. The place is so beautiful that I was literally speechless! But what really surprised me the most was the clarity of the water, I had never seen a body of water with so much visibility. Immediately in my head I started making plans to return as quickly as possible, armed with my underwater photography equipment. I returned home excited about the discovery of this site and my family caught my enthusiasm and plans were set in motion. As I counted the days to return, in my head I was imagining how I wanted the framing I wanted to achieve. My intention was to achieve a vertical frame, showing the growth of the water lilies from the ground to the surface of the spring and thus trying to show the dependence of this plant on the soil, water and sunlight. When the day arrived my wife, my little 4 year old daughter, my mother-in-law and I set out on the trip. It was a beautiful, warm February morning. In the morning we visited a nearby archaeological site and when we finished we boarded a boat that took us along the river that led to the springs. When we arrived it was about two o'clock in the afternoon, so we decided to stop for lunch. I would have liked to jump right into the water and start taking pictures, but the heat, the hunger and especially the fact that I was accompanied by my family managed to keep me longer. By the time we finished lunch and I was getting ready to enter the water, the heat was very strong and uncomfortable, especially for my little daughter. My wife looked at me with an expression that did not allow any debate and said: "My mom and Nati are very overwhelmed by the heat, you have 15 minutes to take your picture and we are leaving". At that moment my plans of having a quiet photo session, enjoying this spectacular environment were shattered with the added pressure of having three people waiting for me. In nature photography you have to be flexible first and foremost because conditions are constantly changing. If I had 15 minutes I would make the best use of them. Without wasting time I jumped into the water to assess the situation. The bottom of the spring was about 5 meters deep. I dove down to start testing the first framing and light measurements and it was at that moment that I encountered a big inconvenience that I had not contemplated either. When I reached the bottom, the force of the water coming from the ground pushed my body upwards and it was extremely difficult for me to keep my buoyancy stable to frame the image the way I wanted. Fortunately I had brought more lead to attach to my belt. I quickly climbed into the boat, adjusted my weight and checked my watch. I still had 5 minutes of work to do. With the added weight I was able to compensate better for the push of the water and that allowed me to finally shoot four or five pictures in time. Goal accomplished! The final result faithfully shows the underwater environment of the spring, the absolute clarity of the water and that delicate balance between the natural elements that allow these plants to thrive. Sometimes sacrifices bring unexpected rewards. Finally, this photo ended up winning a prize in a national nature photography contest and being exhibited in one of the most visited places in Mexico City. It also left me with a great lesson: it doesn't matter how much time you have as long as you make the most of it.
