This abstract work was inspired by RMS measuring instruments in mastering studios and naturally uses artistic freedom to represent the quadratic mean of a physical quantity that changes over time. The term "RMS" stands for "Root-Mean-Squared". Most books define this as "the amount of AC power that produces the same thermal effect as an equivalent DC power", or something like that, but an RMS value is more than just that. The RMS value is the square root of the mean of the squared function of the instantaneous values. The term RMS ONLY applies to time-varying sinusoidal voltages, currents or complex waveforms where the magnitude of the waveform changes over time, and is not used in the analysis or calculation of DC circuits where the magnitude is always constant. When comparing the rms value of an AC sinusoidal waveform that delivers the same electrical power to a given load as a DC equivalent circuit, the rms value is referred to as the "root mean square". In other words, RMS is an equivalent DC current value that indicates how many volts or amps of DC current a time-varying sinusoidal waveform corresponds to in terms of its ability to produce the same power. For example, the mains voltage in the UK is 240Vac. This value is assumed to be the rms value of "240 volts rms". This means that the sinusoidal rms voltage from the wall sockets of a UK house can produce the same average positive power as 240 volts of constant DC voltage. RMS is a measuring instrument that measures the average volume of an audio track within a window of about 300 milliseconds. The value displayed is an average value of the audio signal.The RMS value gives a more accurate insight into the perceived loudness of the piece of music for the average listener. Using measurement tools to visualise the average RMS value also helps to avoid distortion, especially with loud music. Often music sounds different to everyone, but there are many tools that sound engineers can use to ensure that the overall mix sounds good.It is also important to understand the difference between RMS and LUFS (Loudness Units relative to Full Scale). While RMS is a useful indication of the loudness of your track, it is only an average and not a 100% accurate measurement. Built-in LUFS shows you the loudness of audio files, but with a more accurate representation of how our ears perceive sound. Also, if you compare the LUFS and RMS levels and don't notice any level spikes, this is a good sign of a good mix and it may be time to move on to mastering. One of the most difficult aspects of music is how subjective its creation and final product can be. Even though this is true, there are many parameters in audio mastering that should be adhered to. For a loud track that needs to convey a powerful and intense sound, the RMS level should be around -7 dBFS to -12 dBFS. For tracks that do not have so much dynamic energy or quieter parts, an RMS level of -16 dBFS to -18 dBFS would be more suitable. Peak levels in audio signals can be difficult to handle, and it can become even more difficult as more tracks compete for the same audio range. Also, using level meters is a good way to get a better understanding of where audio peaks in the frequency spectrum. The dynamic range of a production is directly related to peak volume, and how this is managed in the track requires a unique approach to the particular requirements of the production. Any track that causes too much distortion in the mix should be handled accordingly with the rest of the mix. The correct RMS level to look for will also depend on the type of song and genre, and will require its own approach to the mix to achieve the desired RMS level. Some songs require a louder or quieter approach, but it is important to ensure that the levels are not too high and that each track is mixed accordingly. RMS (Root Mean Square) is an average of the volume in the waveform as a whole. It also means that a short, single audio clip is not as loud as a longer one. An RMS meter approximates how you perceive sound, which is important because our ears don't perceive all frequencies and you need to get an idea of how the sound is affecting you. Also, our ears do not perceive certain peaks, so we need the help of other audio meters to get the most accurate reading. As for the peak, this determines the highest voltage that a waveform reaches. When your audio signal peaks, this is where you will hear clipping and distortion. Another difference between peak and RMS values is that the peak value indicates an instantaneous reading. In contrast, the RMS value provides a measurement over a short period of about 300 milliseconds. A common frustration among musicians is how easy it is to overdrive a mix. Music by its very nature can often be loud, and while you want to capture that power, you still need to get a handle on it to create a pleasant listening experience. Fixing peaks requires a multi-step approach using plug-ins such as a loudness meter or even gain reduction tools. Reading the peaks is quite simple and can help you identify the cause of the peaks. On a related note, it is also important to check the average loudness and the integrated loudness. Although we know how to process and read the frequency spectrum, we cannot hear everything. Therefore, visual representation through a loudness meter is essential for further mastery of an audio production. Music generally contains many different elements, each occupying its own space. Most of the time, the loudness is not the same. Also, by reading the RMS and integrated loudness values, you can determine which parts of the mix still need work. The way a mix sounds is a combination of frequencies, and in many cases these frequencies collide with each other or fight for the same space. The dynamic range of each track in the production needs to be designed to fit the rest of the audio. If this is neglected, a peaking mix can quickly result. In addition to using methods such as gain reduction, adjusting each track's EQ can provide a reliable solution to loudness goals. In the frequency spectrum, humans can hear between 20 Hz and 20 kHz. In addition, age-related hearing loss or other factors may limit our frequency range. Considering that each person's hearing may be slightly different, it is important to take this into account for an optimal mix. This factor of audio perception is another reason why understanding dynamic range, peak level, integrated LUFS and other loudness units is of utmost importance. The way our ears perceive audio is also a good indication of how to adjust the equaliser. It should be a good mix of technical skill and knowledge of psychoacoustics. Of course, technical skills can be very helpful in music production, but an understanding of psychoacoustics can take a track to the next level. The more tracks that are stacked on top of each other, the more frequencies are masked as they fight for the same space. To achieve a desirable mix, a balance is required across the frequency spectrum. Although there are certain frequency parameters to work within, this is a subjective area to work on. Our ears can mislead us depending on the frequency range we receive. The older we get, the more common it is for our hearing to block out frequencies. This is another reason why a visual representation of integrated loudness, peak level, average loudness and more is so important. The human ear perceives audio signals in a very complex way, and the ability to visualise the dynamic range and volume of your track is crucial to optimising the mix of your track as a whole. Although music is subjective, the average volume level in a production should always provide a pleasant listening experience. To accurately measure loudness, you need to check RMS, peak levels, limiter parameters and other metering tools.
