Here are some of the key origins and influences on the development of rose gardens: (1) - Ancient Persia (modern-day Iran): The cultivation of roses for their beauty and fragrance has deep roots in ancient Persia. Persian gardens, dating as far back as 500 BC, incorporated roses and other plants, emphasizing symmetry, flowing water features, and geometric designs. The Persian poet and scholars like Omar Khayyam, Hafez, and Saadi Shirazi, praised the beauty of roses in their writings, further popularizing their cultivation. (2) - Ancient Rome: The Romans greatly admired roses and expanded their cultivation throughout their empire. They cultivated various rose species and developed techniques for grafting and breeding roses to create new varieties. Roses were used for decorative purposes, as gifts, and for perfume production. Roman gardens often featured roses, and they were used in festivals and celebrations. (3) - Islamic Gardens: During the Islamic Golden Age, from the 8th to the 13th centuries, rose cultivation and gardens flourished. Islamic gardens incorporated elements from various cultures, including Persian influences. These gardens featured geometric designs, water channels, and aromatic plants, including roses. They were considered places of beauty, tranquility, and spiritual contemplation. (4) - Medieval Europe: The popularity of roses continued to grow during the Middle Ages in Europe.
