Abstract, contemporary work whose colouring and geometry are reminiscent of concrete mixers and are intended to draw attention to the environmental problems associated with concrete production. Concrete ("Beton" in German - from the synonymous French word béton,) is a building material mixed as a dispersion with the addition of liquid from a binder and aggregates. Normal concrete contains cement as a binder and aggregate as an aggregate. The added water initiates the chemical setting process, i.e. the hardening. In order to influence the workability and other properties of the concrete, concrete additives and concrete admixtures are added to the mix. Most of the water is chemically bound. The complete drying of the mixture may therefore only take place after hardening. Concrete is one of the most frequently used building materials. Its usage worldwide, ton for ton, is twice that of steel, wood, plastics, and aluminum combined. Globally, the ready-mix concrete industry, the largest segment of the concrete market, is projected to exceed $600 billion in revenue by 2025. This widespread use results in a number of environmental impacts. The concrete industry is one of the main emitters of greenhouse gases that cause global warming. Concrete production is responsible for about 6 to 9 % of all man-made CO2 emissions, which is three to four times the size of all air traffic. Significant amounts of water, gravel, cement and sand are consumed worldwide for the production of concrete. The global supply of suitable sand is becoming increasingly scarce, especially due to concrete production. The two main reasons for the CO2 emissions in concrete production are : the burning of the cement required for concrete production is very energy-intensive, but the greater part of the carbon dioxide released dissolves from the limestone as geogenic CO2 during the burning process. Worldwide, 4.1 billion tonnes of cement are produced annually, which on average contains about 60 % CaO. Thus, even with optimal process control, the release of the carbon dioxide bound in the lime results in emissions of at least two billion tonnes of CO2 or 6 % of the worldwide annual CO2 emissions. In Switzerland, it is even 9 % of all man-made emissions. Sand is one of the most used building materials in the world, as it is one of the main components of concrete, along with water, gravel and cement. The worldwide extraction of sand for the construction industry and especially for concrete production is already leading to a noticeable shortage of sand as a raw material. However, at least 95 percent of the sand available worldwide, especially desert sand, is not suitable for concrete production because the grains are too round and smoothly ground. Concrete made from it would then not withstand any major acting forces. In 2018, a process was patented that allows the use of desert sand and fine sand: For this purpose, the sand is rotated in a high-speed mixer at 1500 revolutions per minute, producing a kind of stone powder with a crushed grain size (previously, mixing at 50 revolutions per minute was common). The stone powder is then processed with mineral binders into a granulate. Such granules produce a particularly resilient concrete that also requires 40 % less cement. The use of desert sand is not worthwhile in Europe (as the transport costs exceed the material value from about 50 km), but in Germany alone, hundreds of thousands of tonnes of previously unused fine sand are produced every year. As early as spring 2020, two initial plants are to be put into operation in Saudi Arabia and Egypt, from which time it could be possible to evaluate the benefits of the process. Until the 1960s, cement plants were considered to be "polluters" that emitted a large amount of dust and exhaust gases into the environment. Although cement plants still emit four times as much CO2 as global air traffic combined, environmental protection in cement production improved significantly thereafter, with more modern filter systems drastically reducing dust emissions and the further development of rotary kilns and firing technology reducing energy consumption and the emission of harmful waste gases such as sulphur dioxide (SO2), carbon dioxide (CO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx). The latter are removed from the exhaust gases by so-called "SNCR processes" (selective non-catalytic reduction). However, the high emission of carbon dioxide is an aggravating problem with the increasing greenhouse effect. The cement industry is one of the main emitters of greenhouse gases that cause global warming. Worldwide, 4.1 billion tonnes of cement are produced annually, which on average contains about 60 % CaO. Thus, even with optimal process control, the release of the carbon dioxide bound in the lime results in emissions of at least three billion tonnes of CO2, or about 6 to 8 % of annual CO2 emissions. If the global cement industry were a country, it would be the third largest emitter worldwide - after the People's Republic of China and the United States. To meet the targets of the Paris Climate Agreement, annual emissions from the cement industry would have to fall by at least 16 percent by 2030. Accordingly, considerations are being made to produce cement using more environmentally friendly methods. There are approaches for new manufacturing processes that release significantly less CO2. To save fossil fuels such as coal, natural gas and crude oil, so-called secondary or substitute fuels are used in some cases. These alternative liquid and solid fuels such as waste oil or solvents, as well as processed household and commercial waste, car tyres, sewage sludge, animal meal, waste wood or other biomasses are burnt in the rotary kiln without producing additional harmful exhaust gases due to the oxidising conditions and extremely high temperatures (flame temperature > 2,000 °C). Throughout Western Europe, efforts are being made to increase the proportion of so-called secondary fuels in the cement plant to around 70 %. In this context, this disposal option through co-incineration is used, also in emerging countries, as a tried and tested means of developing disposal infrastructures that are lacking at low cost and of ensuring sustainable national disposal under high environmental protection standards. For more than 30 years, whole car and truck tyres (without prior shredding) have been used thermally and - because of the iron carcass - materially in the kiln inlet of the rotary kiln. Special attention is paid to the emission of volatile trace elements and heavy metals, such as mercury, cadmium or thallium, while all heavy and non-volatile trace elements are adsorptively bound by the freshly deacidified limestone (principle of dry sorption). Soluble chromates contained in cements can trigger an allergy, whereby the high basic pH value of the aqueous solution contributes to this.
