The body mass index is a measure for evaluating a person's body weight in relation to their height. It was developed by Adolphe Quetelet in 1832 and by Ignaz Kaup after the First World War. The BMI is only a rough guideline, as it does not take into account stature and gender or the individual composition of a person's body mass from fat and muscle tissue. Body mass index (BMI) is a value derived from the mass (weight) and height of a person. The BMI is defined as the body mass divided by the square of the body height, and is expressed in units of kg/m2, resulting from mass in kilograms and height in metres. The BMI may be determined using a table or chart which displays BMI as a function of mass and height using contour lines or colours for different BMI categories, and which may use other units of measurement (converted to metric units for the calculation). The BMI is a convenient rule of thumb used to broadly categorize a person as underweight, normal weight, overweight, or obese based on tissue mass (muscle, fat, and bone) and height. Major adult BMI classifications are underweight (under 18.5 kg/m2), normal weight (18.5 to 24.9), overweight (25 to 29.9), and obese (30 or more). When used to predict an individual's health, rather than as a statistical measurement for groups, the BMI has limitations that can make it less useful than some of the alternatives, especially when applied to individuals with abdominal obesity, short stature, or unusually high muscle mass. The BMI was developed in 1832 by the Belgian mathematician Adolphe Quetelet. The term body mass index (BMI) comes from an article by Ancel Keys published in 1972. Keys, however, recommended the BMI only for the statistical comparison of populations, not for the assessment of the obesity of individuals. The BMI gained importance through its use by US life insurers, who use this simple classification to calculate premiums for life insurance policies in such a way that additional risks due to obesity are taken into account. Since the early 1980s, BMI has also been used by the World Health Organisation. The current BMI classification of the WHO has essentially existed since 1995. In some German states (e.g. Baden-Württemberg and North Rhine-Westphalia) the body mass index is used as a criterion for civil service employment. Persons with a BMI that is too high or too low are not appointed to civil service. This regulation has been strongly criticised on various occasions. In anthropometric history and historical anthropology, the mean body mass index of population groups, similar to height, is used as an indicator of standard of living. Using historical data collected, for example, during recruit mustering, it is possible to look back into the past. Estimates of BMI carried out on bones from archaeological contexts lead back to more distant times. They can be used to estimate that the average diet in early medieval Europe was quite good. Values of normal-weight persons are between 18.5 kg/m² and 25 kg/m² according to the obesity classification of the World Health Organisation (WHO). From 30 kg/m², people are considered obese and in need of treatment. In Germany, this is 25 % of the population; 9 % of the population have a medical diagnosis of obesity and are therefore treated on an outpatient basis.
