Abstract, contemporary work that captivates through its geometry and through the use of light & shadow leaves the viewer with the impression of a vice and could be classified as concrete art.A vice is a device for clamping workpieces while they are being machined. A vice or vise (American English / "Schraubstock" in German) consists of jaws between which the workpiece is clamped. While one jaw is fixed, the other can be moved with a crank or a bare rod in conjunction with a threaded spindle. Depending on the type of guide, a distinction is made between bottle vises and parallel vises. In the case of bottle vises or forge vises, the movable jaws are pivoted around a pin located underneath. Only when the jaws are completely closed are they parallel. When opened, the movable jaw moves away from the fixed jaw by moving around a pivot point, thus forming an angle with the fixed jaw. This design is constructed for forging workpieces heated to embers. It allows particularly fast clamping to minimise heat loss and transmits the impulse of the hammer blows via the leg directly into the ground. In parallel vises, the fixed and movable jaws are connected to each other both by the spindle and by a guide and slide rail, so that regardless of the opening, the angle of the position to each other does not change. Usually the spindle runs inside the guide. Interchangeable jaws can be fitted to the jaws so that if the jaws are damaged, it is not necessary to replace the whole vice but only the interchangeable jaws. Magnetic protective jaws made of aluminium and plastic are also available, which can be adapted to the workpiece in terms of shape and hardness. Simple parallel vices are often attached to a workbench with a clamping screw (clamping vices) and accommodate workpieces that are machined by hand. Vices permanently installed on workbenches are ideally height-adjustable to ensure optimum workplace ergonomics. In addition to height adjustment, turntables, folding devices and folding-lift devices are also available from specialist dealers. The vice is opened or closed by turning the spindle with the help of a crank. Care should be taken that the vice opens forward so that long workpieces can be clamped vertically past the workbench. The spindle of the vice has a movement thread (trapezoidal thread). This allows, on the one hand, the distance between the jaws to be adjusted to the size of the workpiece and, on the other hand, a clamping force to be exerted on the workpiece. The basic body of a simple vice is often made of cast iron. Today, however, high-quality vises are forged from steel because of the better material properties, and often the rear part of the vice, above the spindle, is also intended as a small anvil (which is not possible with cast iron because of the brittleness of the material). The length of the hand crank is usually designed so that the torque on the spindle achieved via the lever does not become too high. It is thus not possible to destroy the vice by normal body force alone.
