ABOUT THIS ARTWORK: A.P.POLO - AKASHA-CHRONIK
A.P.Polo - "Akasha-Chronik" - Hamburg (Germany) - Painiting/New Media Art. Abstract, colourful, contemporary work that attempts to do justice to the esoteric idea of a supersensible book of life that contains an all-encompassing world memory in immaterial form and can be classified as visionary art.In parts of esotericism, especially in modern or Anglo-Indian theosophy and anthroposophy, Akashic Records (Akasha-Chronik in German) refers to the idea of a supersensible "book of life" that contains an all-encompassing world memory in immaterial form. In theosophy and anthroposophy, the Akashic records are a compendium of all universal events, thoughts, words, emotions, and intent ever to have occurred in the past, present, or future in terms of all entities and life forms, not just human. They are believed by theosophists to be encoded in a non-physical plane of existence known as the mental plane. It is believed all thoughts, words, intent etc. generates its own unique "frequency or vibration" which is stored in the Akashic Records. There are also older ideas of such a "world memory" (for example in Neoplatonism, in Christian tradition and in pre-modern esotericism), but the term "Akashic records" in this form is of modern theosophical origin. In the German-speaking world it became familiar mainly through Rudolf Steiner. Esotericists like Steiner claimed to be able to "read" the Akashic Chronicle. Akasha is the Sanskrit word for "aether", "sky", or "atmosphere". The idea of a world memory has a long tradition in Europe and can be found, for example, in Plotinus (c. 205-270), Marsilio Ficino (1433-1499) and Paracelsus (1493-1541), as well as in rudimentary form in Agrippa von Nettesheim (1486-1535), Éliphas Lévi (1810-1875) and Eduard von Hartmann (1842-1906). According to the Indologist and religious scholar Helmuth von Glasenapp, it is of original occidental origin and, notwithstanding the use of the Sanskrit word akasha, foreign to traditional Indian thought. Helena Petrovna Blavatsky (1831-1891), the founder of modern theosophy, spoke in the first volume of her work Isis Unveiled, published in 1877, of "metaphysical tablets", "daguerreotypes printed on the astral light", in which records "of all that was, is, or ever will be" were imprinted and which were "presented to the eye of the seer and prophet as a living image". The use of the term "Akashic records" is first attested in the work of the Theosophist Charles W. Leadbeater (1847-1934) in his Clairvoyance, published in 1899. Under other names (such as "astral projections" or "astral visions"), access to an imagined world memory was a popular subject of esoteric teachings in the Theosophical Society and its environment (Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn) from the late 19th century onwards. Rudolf Steiner (1861-1925), then head of the German section of the Adyar Theosophical Society, used the term mainly in the series of essays "Aus der Akasha-Chronik" ("From the Akashic Records") published between 1904 and 1908. The associated idea of being able to perceive past events supersensually remained essential to his thinking later on, for example as a "backward-looking clairvoyant gaze". He considered the reporting of some factual details as a supplementary way of what had emerged from the "Akashic Records research". He was primarily concerned not with "external actual history" but with the "supernatural" itself. Thus, in "Aus der Akasha-Chronik" he wanted to write a kind of history of the soul, and he claimed to have seen the inner truth ("spirit knowledge") of Christianity. He understood the inspiration of the Bible to mean "that it must have been written by someone who is also able to look into the Akashic Records." According to Steiner, "reading" the Akashic Records presupposes an ascent into the sphere of "intuition" - for Steiner, the highest of three levels of supersensible cognition. It encompasses memories of previous incarnations and means an immersion in a "consciousness that goes beyond that of an individual human being". By linking to earlier forms of collective memory, a biographical memory can be expanded into a memory of humanity. This becomes "the possibility of understanding the developmental impulse underlying human history" and of taking responsibility for future global development. Steiner's reports are, according to the anthroposophical view, generally comprehensible descriptions of a supersensible reality - accessible only after meditative training. In his writings "Wie erlangt man Erkenntnisse höherer Welten" (1904) or "Die Geheimwissenschaft im Umriss" (1910), Steiner claimed to be able to make this path of knowledge accessible to everyone in principle. Besides Leadbeater, other English-speaking theosophists claimed to be able to read the Akashic Records, including Levi H. Dowling (1844-1911),[16] Annie Besant (1847-1933) and Alice Bailey (1880-1949). Other influential "readers" of the Akashic Records were the Rosicrucian Max Heindel (1865-1919) and the "sleeping prophet" Edgar Cayce (1877-1945).The term "Akashic Records" has also been used frequently in the New Age, for example by Shirley MacLaine in Out on a Limb (1983), by Janet and Stewart Farrar in The Witches' Way (1984), by Marian Green in Experiments in Aquarian Magic (1985) and by Henry Reed in Edgar Cayce on Mysteries of the Mind (1989). More recent interpreters are Penny McLean and Ulla von Bernus. In English, there are many books on the market today that offer information from the Akashic Records or seek to provide instructions on how to read this chronicle for oneself. In contrast to the main traditional use of the term, for example by Steiner, "reading" in the Akashic Records is also used by today's esotericists to refer to the future, for example to justify fortune-telling or as a background to Indian palm leaf libraries in which the life stories of all their future visitors are said to be stored. In the opinion of the religious scholar Hartmut Zinser, supposed findings about and from the Akashic Records are statements of faith in the religious sense, but their faith character is denied by passing them off as objective facts. Thus esotericists like Rudolf Steiner "are subject to one of the basic epistemological errors of modern occultism: not, or at least not sufficiently, to distinguish between perception (here: the soul experiences) and interpretation (as a supersensible world)." According to Rudolf Steiner's readings in the Akashic Records, there had already been an " ancient Indian cultural epoch" in 7227 BC, which is said to have been replaced from 5067 BC by an " ancient Persian cultural epoch" and from 2907 BC by an " Egyptian-Chaldean cultural epoch". The religious scholar Julia Iwersen considers this summary unrealistic, since the cultural developments in Egypt and Mesopotamia were very different and there is no evidence of advanced civilisations before 3000 BC. Iwersen considers the "primeval Indian cultural epoch" propagated by Steiner to be an embarrassment to Steiner, who had taken his historical picture from Blavatsky's statements in the Stanzas of Dzyan, because Blavatsky had in the course of time transferred the place of origin of esoteric wisdom from Egypt to India in her writings. Furthermore, critics complain that many assertions already show contradictions in hermeneutical textual analysis or are incompatible with the established state of corresponding specialist sciences. Levi H. Dowling, for example, derived implausible statements about Jesus Christ from the Akashic Records Chronicle: he is said to have made extensive journeys about which nothing is known either according to historical-critical exegesis or general historical science. Thus, the value of such publications could only be measured by their poetic achievement, but not by their reality content. Visionary art is art that purports to transcend the physical world and portray a wider vision of awareness including spiritual or mystical themes, or is based in such experiences. The Vienna School of Fantastic Realism, first established in 1946, is considered to be an important technical and philosophical catalyst in its strong influence upon contemporary visionary art. Its artists included Ernst Fuchs, Rudolf Hausner, Arik Brauer, Wolfgang Hutter and Anton Lehmden among others. Several artists who would later work in visionary art trained under Fuchs, including Mati Klarwein, Robert Venosa, Philip Rubinov Jacobson and De Es Schwertberger. Visionary art often carries themes of spiritual, mystical or inner awareness. Despite this broad definition, there does seem to be emerging some definition to what constitutes the contemporary visionary art 'scene' and which artists can be considered especially influential. Symbolism, Cubism, Surrealism and Psychedelic art are also direct precursors to contemporary visionary art. Notable visionary artists count Hilma af Klint, Hieronymous Bosch, William Blake, Morris Graves (of the Pacific Northwest School of Visionary Art), Emil Bisttram, and Gustave Moreau amongst their antecedents.
