A.P.Polo - "Wu Wei" - Hamburg (Germany) - New Media Art. Abstract, colourful, contemporary work intended to represent the Daoist attitude of non-action (Wu Wei). Taoism or Daoism is a philosophical or religious tradition of Chinese origin which emphasises living in harmony with the Tao (literally: the Way, also romanised as Dao). The Tao is a fundamental idea in most Chinese philosophical schools; in Taoism, however, it denotes the principle that is the source, pattern and substance of everything that exists. Taoism differs from Confucianism by not emphasising rigid rituals and social order, but is similar in the sense that it is a teaching about the various disciplines for achieving "perfection" by becoming one with the unplanned rhythms of the universe called "the way" or "dao". Taoist ethics vary depending on the particular school, but in general tend to emphasise wu wei ("attitude of genuine non-action, motivated by a lack of desire to participate in human affairs", "naturalness", simplicity, spontaneity, and the Three Treasures: "compassion", "frugality", and "humility". The roots of Taoism go back at least to the 4th century BCE. Early Taoism drew its cosmological notions from the School of Yinyang (Naturalists), and was deeply influenced by one of the oldest texts of Chinese culture, the I Ching, which expounds a philosophical system about how to keep human behaviour in accordance with the alternating cycles of nature. The "Legalist" Shen Buhai (c. 400 – c. 337 BCE) may also have been a major influence, expounding a realpolitik of wu wei. The Tao Te Ching, a compact book containing teachings attributed to Laozi (in german Lao Tse), is widely considered the keystone work of the Taoist tradition, together with the later writings of Zhuangzi. Taoism has had a profound influence on Chinese culture in the course of the centuries, and Taoists (dàoshi, "masters of the Tao"), a title traditionally attributed only to the clergy and not to their lay followers, usually take care to note distinction between their ritual tradition and the practices of Chinese folk religion and non-Taoist vernacular ritual orders, which are often mistakenly identified as pertaining to Taoism. Chinese alchemy (especially neidan), Chinese astrology, Chan (Zen) Buddhism, several martial arts, traditional Chinese medicine, feng shui, and many styles of qigong have been intertwined with Taoism throughout history. Beyond China, Taoism also had influence on surrounding societies in Asia. Today, the Taoist tradition is one of the five religious doctrines officially recognised in the Peoples Republic of China (PRC) as well as the Republic of China (ROC), and although it does not travel readily from its East Asian roots, it claims adherents in a number of societies, in particular in Hong Kong, Macau, and in Southeast Asia. The term Wu Wei is based on the Daoist concept of the Dao, the all-encompassing origin and active principle that brings about the order and transformation of things, so that it would not be wise to intervene in the operation of this principle. According to this doctrine, the ultimate truth is one and acts spontaneously, without the human spirit having to intervene in it. The return to the origin can only happen when dualistic thinking is abandoned and actions are natural and spontaneous. Wu Wei does not mean that one does not act at all, but that actions arise spontaneously in accordance with the Dao. As a result, what is necessary is done easily and effortlessly, and both overzealousness and blind actionism (which are considered obstructive) are avoided. It is a state of inner stillness that allows the right action to emerge at the right time without effort of the will. The perfect is thought of in Daoism as empty, soft and spontaneous, and action should be accordingly, i.e. without intervention of the dualistic intellect, adapting to the situation and intuitive. Perfect action intuitively recognises the best means and it seems pointless to exhaust one's energy in unfruitful action for the sake of action, but action should be limited to the appropriate circumstances and means. The best translation of the term Wu Wei would thus be "non-intervention", "active non-action" or "action through non-action", and it is a kind of creative passivity. This attitude of letting things happen also results in non-violence and non-resistance as a natural consequence. The term Wu Wei first appeared in Chinese philosophy in the Daodejing and remained an essential feature of Daoism. "If you want to travel by water, a boat is suitable for that, because a boat moves in a suitable way on water. But if you go on land, you will get nowhere with it and will only have trouble and achieve nothing but harm to yourself." (Zhuangzi XIV). "Never do and yet nothing remains undone." "The superior man does it without intention." (Daodejing XXXVII) "Yet without intention nothing remains undone; for one is never in doubt as to what to do." (I Ching)
