A.P.Polo - "Kneipe" - Hamburg (Germany) - New Media Art. Abstract, contemporary work whose colour scheme is reminiscent of the typical German pub where smoking is allowed. A "Kneipe" is an establishment similar to a bar, inn or tavern, common in German cities. At a Kneipe, beer and other alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages are served. The term 'Kneipe' has its origins in the 19th century and comes from the student slang of the time. In Austria, similar places are known as 'Beisl', in the German-speaking part of Switzerland as 'Beiz', in Bavaria as 'Boazn' and in Baden-Wütttemberg as 'Boitz'. All these terms are derived from the Hebrew word 'Beijt', meaning 'house'. More formal, but less frequently used terms for "Kneipe" are "Lokal", "Schänke" (or "Schenke"), "Taverne", Spund/Spunten or "Schankwirtschaft" as opposed to "Speisewirtschaft" (restaurant). Since pubs often also offer small meals or snacks, the border to restaurant is fluid. The term "Kneipe" is documented as early as 1781 by Christian Wilhelm Kindleben for "eine Bierschenke"("a beer tavern"). Augustin in his "Idiotikon der Burschensprache" (1791) already speaks of a "Wirthshaus". Around the middle of the 19th century, the word was used in the student pub as a Germanisation of the earlier used word "Kommers" in student language. C. B von Ragotzky wrote his work "Der flotte Bursch" in 1831, in which the explanation of "Kneipe" corresponds to the meaning today: "Kneipe is generally called any tavern". The term is a shortening of the term Kneipschenke, which already existed in the 18th century. These were premises that were so cramped that the guests had to sit squeezed together. The Middle German verb kneipen for "to press together" is a loanword from the Middle Low German word kn?pen, which is related to the High German "kneifen". The idiom "eine Kneipentour machen" ("to go on a pub crawl") refers to a visit to several pubs in succession, accompanied by corresponding alcohol consumption. It is sometimes implied that the guest was thrown out of one pub because of his drunkenness or because he could not pay and therefore visits another. Typical for "Kneipen" is the serving of draught beer at the bar, at which guests can often sit. There are then more tables and chairs in the guest room. Some pubs also have games equipment such as pool tables, table football, dart boards, pinball machines or slot machines. Many pubs also have television sets where, for example, football matches are shown in public. Some pubs have a money box where members of local savings clubs regularly put cash. Pubs often also serve as meeting places for other clubs that hold regular get-togethers there, so sometimes objects belonging to these clubs or referring to their activities, such as club flags or trophies, can be found in the pubs. Some pubs also have a separate room or hall that is rented out for club meetings or family celebrations. For years, there has been a tendency for the number of "Kneipen" to decline continuously. The front-runner in pub death is Hamburg, where the number of pubs fell by 48.1 percent between 2001 and 2010, followed by Lower Saxony with a loss of 41.2 percent. There are several reasons for this: People drink less beer, poor people earn less money and young people spend their free time differently. Nationwide, the number of pubs in Germany declined from just under 36,700 to around 31,100 in the years from 2009 to 2015. There is no discernible connection between the decline in pubs and the protection of non-smokers; in both Hamburg and Lower Saxony there is an exception in the law that allows smoking in pubs up to 75 m² in area throughout the entire premises. In the Free State of Bavaria, which has a general ban on smoking in pubs, only 24.5 per cent of pubs closed in the same period.
