A.P.Polo - "Aerosol" - Hamburg (Germany). An aerosol is a suspension of fine solid particles or liquid droplets in air or another gas. Aerosols can be natural or anthropogenic. The term aerosol commonly refers to the particulate/air mixture, as opposed to the particulate matter alone. Examples of natural aerosols are fog or mist, dust, forest exudates, and geyser steam. Examples of anthropogenic aerosols include particulate air pollutants, mist from the discharge at hydroelectric dams, irrigation mist, perfume from atomizers, smoke, dust, steam from a kettle, sprayed pesticides, and medical treatments for respiratory illnesses. When a person inhales the contents of a vape pen or e-cigarette, they are inhaling an anthropogenic aerosol. The liquid or solid particles in an aerosol have diameters typically less than 1 ?m (larger particles with a significant settling speed make the mixture a suspension, but the distinction is not clear-cut). In general conversation, aerosol often refers to a dispensing system that delivers a consumer product from a can. Diseases can spread by means of small droplets in the breath, sometimes called bioaerosols. According to current knowledge, the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus is mainly transmitted directly from person to person, e.g. when speaking, coughing, sneezing or singing. Both droplets and aerosols, which can remain suspended in the air for a long time, play a role in transmission, although the transition between the two forms is fluid. By maintaining a minimum distance of 1.5 metres, the transmission of droplets and, to a certain extent, aerosols can be reduced. However, there are indications that in indoor spaces with air conditioning, the resulting draughts of air contribute significantly to the spread of medium-sized droplets, which fall out many metres away from coughing patients ("jet rider" behaviour), also contaminating people at a greater distance. According to the Society for Aerosol Research, the transmission of SARS-CoV-2 viruses takes place almost exclusively indoors. Outdoors, the virus is only transmitted "extremely rarely" and never leads to so-called cluster infections, i.e. widespread infections.
