Originally a sky god, he was also a king god, a world or light god and protector of children. Horus is one of the most significant ancient Egyptian deities who served many functions, most notably god of kingship and the sky. He was worshipped from at least the late prehistoric Egypt until the Ptolemaic Kingdom and Roman Egypt. Different forms of Horus are recorded in history and these are treated as distinct gods by Egyptologists. These various forms may possibly be different manifestations of the same multi-layered deity in which certain attributes or syncretic relationships are emphasized, not necessarily in opposition but complementary to one another, consistent with how the Ancient Egyptians viewed the multiple facets of reality. He was most often depicted as a falcon, most likely a lanner falcon or peregrine falcon, or as a man with a falcon head. The earliest recorded form of Horus is the tutelary deity of Nekhen in Upper Egypt, who is the first known national god, specifically related to the ruling pharaoh who in time came to be regarded as a manifestation of Horus in life and Osiris in death. The most commonly encountered family relationship describes Horus as the son of Isis and Osiris, and he plays a key role in the Osiris myth as Osiris's heir and the rival to Set, the murderer and brother of Osiris. In another tradition Hathor is regarded as his mother and sometimes as his wife. Horus has undergone numerous changes in the historical development of Egyptian mythology: Different forms of beings in the shape of a falcon emerged, each of which is embedded in its own myth and therefore has different characteristics and places of worship. The entire myth surrounding Horus is therefore very complex and sometimes appears very complicated. However, the oldest nature of the god Horus was that of a sky god. The two celestial bodies, the sun and the moon, were regarded as the eyes of the god, the right eye being the so-called sun eye and the left eye the moon eye. Various myths entwine around both eyes. The wingtips of the god touched the boundaries of the earth. A pictorial symbol dating from the early period, showing a pair of wings, the sun barque coming from Re and a falcon sitting above it, is regarded as a contamination of various celestial images. This depiction is considered a precursor of the symbol of the winged sun, which appeared frequently later. In his significance as the emblem of a victorious people, Horus advanced to become the god of war and the war-bringing leader, which gave rise to the belief that the king (pharaoh) was his earthly embodiment. From this time onwards, the kings of Egypt carried the falcon god Horus in their royal titulature. The significance of Horus as a sky god and a king god is considered to be equally old or contemporaneous. Because the kings worshipped the god Re at the same time, Horus was identified with the sun. According to the people's conception, which was contrary to the state religion, Horus had in the meantime been equated with the son of Osiris. The resulting interrelationship of the two identifications of a god led to the formation of different myths. Despite the differences between these two Horus gods, in later times the Egyptians merged the sun Horus with the god of the same name of the Osiris cult into one god Horus. However, this merging process (syncretism) led to different results in different cult centres, so that there were eventually fifteen different Horus gods. Despite these many special forms, a rough classification can be made through the descent history attributed to Horus in myth: As the son of Atum or Re, of Geb or Nut, Horus belongs to the cult of the Sun. As the son of Isis and Osiris, he belongs to the Osiris myth. For all the kings of Egypt, the reign of Horus was the model. They took the title "Living Horus", and so the Horus name is the oldest Egyptian royal title. It is already documented, for example, for the kings Hat Hor and Scorpion I. The title is symbolised by a falcon sitting on a rectangle, the serech. This contains the so-called palace façade in the lower part and the name of the king above it. On the so-called Narmer palette, which dates to the 0th Dynasty, a falcon is depicted, which is called Horus. Until the 4th Dynasty, the Horus name was the only name of the king (pharaoh), but in the same dynasty the gold Horus name (also gold name) was added as a further royal title. By being crowned king of Egypt, the ruler became Horus. This was expressed not only by the Horus name itself. Texts on stelae speak of the king coming to "the Horus throne of the living": The king sat on the throne of Horus. One of the most famous stelae on which this phrase is also found is the so-called Restoration Stele of Tutankhamun, where it says, among other things: "Appeared on the throne of Horus of the living" and "to create a king forever, a Horus who lasts for all time".
