ABOUT THIS ARTWORK: A.P.POLO - WINDENERGIE
A.P.Polo - "Windenergie" - Hamburg (Germany) - New Media Art. Abstract, contemporary representation of a wind turbine that captivates with its colourfulness and geometry. Wind energy or wind power is the large-scale use of wind as a renewable energy source. Wind energy has been used since ancient times to make energy from the environment available for technical purposes. In the past, the mechanical energy made available by windmills was used directly on site to drive machines and devices. With their help, grain was ground into flour, groundwater was pumped to the earth's surface, or sawmills were operated. Today, the generation of electrical energy with wind turbines is by far the most important use. At the end of 2019, wind turbines with a nominal capacity of more than 651 GW were installed worldwide, of which 29.1 GW were offshore. Approximately 290.6 GW are located in Asia and more than 148 GW in the Americas, with another large proportion in Europe, while only a few GW are installed in Africa. The wind turbines installed by 2017 were capable of meeting about 5.6% of the world's electricity demand. In 2016, according to BP figures, the turbines installed worldwide supplied around 960 TWh of electrical energy; corresponding to about 3.9 % of global electricity production. Their share of global primary energy consumption of (160,056 TWh), in which they tend to be underrepresented due to the calculation method, was 0.6 %. On good sites, the electricity production costs of wind power plants were already more favourable than the electricity production costs of new coal and nuclear power plants in 2013. Depending on various factors, such as wind accessibility (meaning here: quantitatively and qualitatively suitable wind resources - on site) and turbine design, wind turbines achieve around between 1,400 and over 5,000 full load hours (the latter at the best offshore sites). It is disputed when the first windmills were erected. According to written records from the Codex Hammurapi, they were used more than 4,000 years ago, while other researchers consider their use to be documented as late as the 7th century AD. In Europe, the oldest mentions from England date to the middle of the 9th century AD, in the 11th century they are attested in France. By the 13th century they had spread as far as Poland. Wind energy was used to perform mechanical work with the help of windmills and water pumps. The oldest windmills are known from Persia (for grinding grain), Tibet (as prayer wheels) and China (for pumping water). These had a vertical axis of rotor rotation and a horizontal plane of rotation. The Persian windmill functioned as a resistance rotor. The Chinese windmill, in which vertically standing junk sails automatically align themselves to the wind in the rotation circle around their axis thanks to their specific rigging, is a buoyancy rotor. In Europe, windmills have been known since the 12th century. From the beginning, they were built as buoyancy rotors with a horizontally positioned rotor axis, which is still the basic principle of modern wind turbines. Water-powered scoop wheels for irrigation ("Noria") are known from Mesopotamia as early as the 5th century BC. The first grinding mills powered by water are documented from China in the 3rd century BC. The ancient Egyptians, Persians and later the Greeks and Romans also used water mills. The condition for using water power is that there must be a body of water with a sufficient gradient that carries enough water even in dry periods. Since this condition is not fulfilled in many places in the lowlands, where the wind (often) blows stronger and more evenly, the windmill has established itself as the predominant type of mill in the coastal, flat regions, and the water mill in the more mountainous regions. The flexible availability of motive power in any quantity, independent of time and place, was the main argument for using mills powered by muscle power. In addition, the combination of the aerodynamic knowledge of the Nordic peoples with the craftsmanship of the Central Europeans made the development of windmill technology possible. In addition to pure windmills, there are also mills that draw their motive power from water and wind at the same time. One of the few such mills still completely preserved today is the Hüvener Mühle in northern Emsland. The windmills were improved over time and used not only for grinding but also for threshing, pumping or scooping water and for sawing as well as hammering or beating (fulling). Even before industrialisation, landscapes were created in some wind-favoured regions, such as Denmark, the Netherlands and northern Germany, which were strongly characterised by the commercial use of wind energy. In Europe, several 100,000 windmills existed in the 19th century, which generated up to 25-30 kW of power in good wind conditions. In France, England, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium and Finland there were between 50,000 and 60,000 windmills in the first half of the 19th century. Around 1900, there were about 30,000 windmills in operation in the countries bordering the North Sea alone, with a total output of several 100 MW. Windmills were particularly widespread in the Netherlands, where there were about 9,000 windmills in the second half of the 19th century alone. They were used for grinding grain, spinning cotton and whitewashing cloth. In addition, the mills served as a source of power for punching leather, sawing wood, producing oil, paper and tobacco, and draining marshes or areas of land below sea level. In Germany, the number of windmills continued to rise during the Industrial Revolution, initially up to the time of high industrialisation, and reached its maximum in the 1880s. In the decades that followed, many of the windmills were successively replaced by fossil power sources or electric drives. In 1895, around 18,000 windmills were in operation in Germany. It is estimated that in 1914 about 11,400 and in 1933 4,000 to 5,000 windmills were still in operation. Wind pumps were also significant; the multi-bladed Western windmills with an output of a few 100 watts were widespread. By about 1930, over six million Westernmills had been produced, of which about 150,000 are still in existence. The Western windmills (eng. Western Mill), which were developed in the USA from 1854, spread as water pumps in North and South America, Australia and parts of Africa and were later also used to generate electricity. There were about 1000 manufacturers of windmills in the USA, but they almost completely disappeared from the market after the boom. After the discovery of electricity and the invention of the generator, the idea of using wind energy to generate electricity was obvious. The first wind turbines for electricity generation were built in the late 19th century and remained largely unchanged until after the Second World War, when the first larger turbines with a few 100 kW came onto the market. Since the oil price crises in the 1970s, there has been an increased worldwide search for alternatives to energy production, which has also spurred the development of modern wind turbines. In 1979, various Danish companies began to mass-produce wind turbines. Since the early 1990s, the wind industry has been one of the fastest growing industries in the world. After the Second World War, several thousand Western wind turbines (Westernmills) were set up in the American-occupied territories, in Bavaria and numerous in Upper Austria, to pump water. Around 1958 and 1970, there were still some to be seen, but only one in Dietmannsried in Allgäu has survived to this day in Bavaria. The one in Unterroithen in Upper Austria is the emblem of Edt bei Lambach and is symbolically depicted in gold and with 12 wings in the coat of arms awarded in 1980. Wind energy is considered one of the most promising renewable energy sources due to its worldwide availability, low cost and level of technological development. It is now one of the mainstream technologies in electricity production and plays a central role in the energy policies and strategies of a growing number of countries around the world, also due to technological advances and economic competitiveness in many markets worldwide. Wind turbines can be used to generate electricity in all climate zones, at sea and in all land locations (coastal, inland, mountainous). Often a distinction is only made between wind energy use on land (onshore) and use at sea in offshore wind farms. Up to now, onshore wind energy has been of particular importance, while offshore wind energy, with a share of approx. 3.5 % of installed capacity, is still a niche market. The onshore sector is also expected to dominate in the long term, but with an increasing share of offshore installations. The IEA (International Energy Agency), for example, assumes that around 80 % of the new capacity will be installed onshore by 2035.
