Welcome to the Art Gallery of Stephen Emms - I live in Thunder Bay, Northwestern Ontario, Canada. I am a watercolour/acrylic painting artist and photographer. My subject matter is really not limited, but reflects the beauty of the natural world we live in. I have worked my entire life in the outdoors, often in remote locations which has contributed to my understanding of the natural world. I love to spend my days out in the world capturing everything from landscapes to animals to a simple flower or a minute insect. Art and photography for me, is both relaxing and exhilarating and every picture is moment of wonder. I am fortunate to live where I do with access to Lake Superior and the wilderness of Northwestern Ontario. In my opinion Lake Superior with it’s vastness, untouched beauty, history, weather and dangers make it one of the greatest places in the world. Thank you for spending your time viewing my artwork and please comment or like any of my work you particularly enjoy. You can view my website at: steveemms.com

ABOUT THIS ARTWORK: BEACH DRIFTWOOD
Location: Pigeon Bay, Lake Superior. Ontario, Canada.
Notes: I find driftwood very pleasing to the eye. Driftwood is wood that has floated in the water and has been washed onto a shore or beach of a sea, lake, or river by the action of winds, tides or waves. The shape of driftwood is very distinct, with very different textures depending on the wood, which can be very artistic. In the case of Pigeon Bay some of the driftwood is the result of past logging and the booming of logs in the Pigeon River and Bay. Indigenous peoples would make use of driftwood in many ways, the Ojibwa word for a piece of driftwood is “agwaayaa'angosag”.
Most driftwood in Lake Superior are the remains of trees that have ended up in the water, due to logging, flooding, high winds, or other natural occurrences. It can also be lumber, which is known as drift lumber. Drift lumber includes the remains of man-made wooden objects, such as buildings and their contents washed into the water during storms, wooden objects discarded into the water from shore, dropped dunnage or lost cargo from ships (jetsam), and the remains of shipwrecked wooden ships and boats (flotsam).
