A.P.Polo - "Gradientenfeld" - Hamburg (Germany) - New Media Art. Contemporary work that can be attributed to both geometric abstraction and concrete art. It consists of 36 squares with 9 different contents. In total, the artist painted 1095 rectangles for the content of the 9 different squares, which captivate through intensive colour gradation variations. Geometric abstraction refers to the art movement of abstract painting or sculpture, but also goes beyond its boundaries to some extent. It uses geometric objects such as squares, rectangles, triangles, circles and ellipses. Typical of geometric abstraction are clearly recognisable lines and the division of the picture content into individual areas. The colour palette used includes primary colours and achromatic colours such as black, white and grey, in all tonal gradations. The content of the picture is therefore not representational. The picture completely renounces representational content. The focus is on the interplay of colours and forms. Based on the theories of Piet Mondrian and Theo van Doesburg, Concrete Art developed from this. The term Geometric Abstraction is very widespread worldwide. In the German-speaking and cultural area, however, it is less so, because here a strict boundary is drawn between the depiction of concrete pictorial objects (abstract art), however abstract they may be, and the concretisation of abstract thoughts, emotions or processes in artistic works (concrete art). The concrete artist Max Bill, for example, would certainly not agree to an American gallery classifying one of his works as Mid Century Modern Geometric Abstraction. The dividing line to Abstract Art is overplayed in the term Geometric Abstraction by encompassing both artistic positions. This probably goes back to the influential cosmopolitan artist group Abstraction-Création, founded in France in 1931 by Georges Vantongerloo among others, with many very prominent members. The name of the group describes the wide range of artistic styles represented in it. In this context, "Création" stands for the creation of a work of art out of nothing, more precisely without a material starting point: thus the position of later Concrete Art. In order to unite as many "progressive" artists as possible in this group, attempts were made to blur the existing dividing lines, but (to this day) they could not quite manage without distinguishing terms: Lyrical Abstraction (French abstraction lyrique) and Geometric Abstraction (abstraction géométrique). In North American art after 1945, several art movements (and their worldwide offshoots) see themselves in the tradition of geometric abstraction, for example post-painterly abstraction, hard edge, colour field painting and minimalism. Concrete art was an art movement with a strong emphasis on geometrical abstraction. The term was first formulated by Theo van Doesburg and was then used by him in 1930 to define the difference between his vision of art and that of other abstract artists of the time. After his death in 1931, the term was further defined and popularized by Max Bill, who organized the first international exhibition in 1944 and went on to help promote the style in Latin America. The term was taken up widely after World War 2 and promoted through a number of international exhibitions and art movements.
