Nazar amulets are in some oriental countries common blue, eye-shaped amulets, which should avert the evil eye according to the popular belief. The name comes originally from the Arabic expression Nazar, which among other things stands for "seeing, look, insight". In Turkish nazar boncugu means the Nazar amulet or literally the Blick pearl. In Greek the amulet is called mati ("eye"). In popular belief, people with light blue eyes possess the ominous look. A likewise "blue eye" should banish and avert this look as a counter spell. Gladly Nazar beads against the evil eye are attached to the clothing of small children, hang as an amulet omnipresent on the rearview mirror of many cabs and trucks or serve as decoration on a key ring. However, they can also be found on the entrance door of cattle stables. If an "eye" breaks, it has obviously done its job and averted an evil eye - and is quickly replaced by a new one. A Nazar amulet is usually made of colored glass. It often has the form of a drop of water. Smaller specimens have the size of a pearl and larger ones have the size of a flat disc. The characteristic of the Nazar amulet are its colors: from the inside to the outside concentric circles similar to the iris of an eye in the colors black or dark blue, light blue, white and dark blue. It is therefore often called the "blue eye". Another name is also "Eye of Fatima", named after the youngest daughter of the prophet Mohammed. In the Middle East and North Africa, the defensive sign Hand of Fatima (Hamsa) is often combined with a Nazar. Fatima bint Muhammad (born 606; died 632), in the Persian language area also Fatemeh, was the youngest daughter and according to Shiite opinion the only daughter of the Islamic founder of the religion Mohammed of his first and for a long time only wife Chadidscha bint Chuwailid. Fatima belongs to the Ahl al-bait ' the family of the (prophet) house'. Shiites count her as the only woman together with Mohammed and the twelve Imams among the "Fourteen Infallible". Fatimah is a vital character in Islam and her name is one of the most popular for girls throughout the Muslim world. However, there is controversy between different sects regarding her political role. The evil eye is a kind of curse. It is an answer to the age-old question why bad things happen to good people. The curse goes back to the millennia-old superstition that a jealous gaze will bring disaster to the person opposite. A 5000 year old clay tablet from Mesopotamia is the oldest representation of the Nazar Eye. Its significance today can be traced back to ancient Egypt for about 3000 years. It is said to have originally symbolized the protective eye of the god Osiris and Horus. The Romans called the look Malus and the Greeks Baskania. The Italians now call it Mallochio, the Spanish Mal Ojo and in Hebrew it is called Ayin Hara. You can even find the eye in Mexico with the name Ojo de Vanado. The first writings from Anatolia about the evil eye come from the Hittites, about 3,000 years ago. The evil eye is mentioned in famous literary works, including the Bible (Proverbs 23:6: "Eat not bread of him that hath an evil eye, neither desire after his tender flesh"). The evil eye also appears in the Koran and in plays by Shakespeare. The seafaring people of the Phoenicians and Carthaginians painted the eye as a talisman on the bow of their ships. Today the eye of Horus or Osiris can still be seen on the bow of traditional Maltese luzzu boats. The boats have a Christian name, but the eye is still painted on the ships as a lucky charm. Irish farmers hang a similarly shaped blue ball with the name Droch-shuil over their barn doors. It is supposed to protect animals from the envious look of the neighbors. Even the "all-seeing eye of God" in the Christian faith is said to go back to the eye of Osiris and the thought of the evil eye. The all-seeing eye can be seen on the top of a pyramid on the American dollar bills. According to a UNESCO report, 36% of all cultures today know the evil eye.
