A skyline is the partial view or panorama that draws a city with its highest buildings and structures before the horizon. Skylines have a recognition value for a city and shape its appearance. In the past, the towers of the city fortifications and in Europe church buildings or steeples, in the Islamic cultural area minarets were characteristic for the city silhouette. Nowadays, skyscrapers and television towers are considered an important part of a skyline. The term The Sky Line of New York City was first introduced in 1896, when it was the title of a color lithograph by Charles Graham for the color supplement of the New York Journal. "Geschlechtertürme" have given the small town of San Gimignano in Tuscany the nickname "Manhattan of the Middle Ages". Rival families tried to outdo each other in the height of their towers. This seemed more important to them than a luxurious life, which was not possible in such towers. Even more impressive in the Middle Ages was the sight of the towers of Bologna. In the European Middle Ages, however, the city silhouettes were not usually dominated by commercial or residential buildings, but rather by the city fortifications with city walls, wall, corner and gate towers and especially the church towers (partly also the naves). From these silhouettes, copperplate engravings were often made by specialized entrepreneurs, which pass on to us the lost views of past times. Since it was not possible to get an overview from one drawing position except for villages and towns in valleys, such as Chur, for example, in order to depict concealed towers and naves or steeples on the copperplate engraving, pictures were drawn from two or three positions and then the silhouette was unfolded by drawing. In modern times, large factory buildings and especially factory chimneys began to dominate the skyline of the rapidly growing industrial cities. With the development of television, the television tower often became the tallest building in the city and shaped the skyline. The CN Tower in Toronto, for example, and in Germany the Stuttgart TV tower are considered to be particularly characteristic of the skyline. The Eiffel Tower in Paris occupies a special position. Although it was also the first radio tower, it was primarily erected as a monument of progress for the 1889 World Exhibition in Paris on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the French Revolution and has since then been a feature of the city's skyline. Chicago is regarded as the birthplace of skyscrapers, as it was here that the first house with a steel skeleton, the ten-story Home Insurance Building, was built in 1885. On South Wacker Drive stands Chicago's tallest building, the Willis Tower (formerly Sears Tower), which for a time was also the tallest building in the world. The first cities to become famous for a skyscraper skyline were New York and Chicago, with Chicago leading the way, but New York became by far the more famous skyscraper city and therefore attracts millions of tourists. In addition to the lack of space and the high land prices that were also caused by this, as was the case initially on New York's Manhattan peninsula or in the cities of Hong Kong, Tokyo and Singapore, the need to demonstrate performance also plays a role in the construction of skyscrapers or quarters with skyscrapers, for example in Taipei 101 in Taipei, Taiwan or the Pudong center of Shanghai. In the list of cities with the most large buildings, Hong Kong with 7659 registered skyscrapers is ahead of New York City with 5571 and São Paulo with 4803. This census does not take into account television towers, stadiums, churches and mosques. The ranking by Emporis, an information service provider for the international real estate industry, is based on the number of floors each building has. Emporis also awards the Emporis Skyscraper Award every year.
