A.P.Polo - "Kartoffel" - Hamburg (Germany) - New Media Art. Abstract, contemporary work, which is supposed to represent a potato in modern, geometric form, or rather cut potato slices. The "Kartoffel" (Solanum tuberosum) (Potato in English), in parts of Germany, Austria and Switzerland also known as Erdapfel, Erdbirne, Grundbirne, Potaten (only in plural) and other regional names, is a useful plant from the nightshade family (Solanaceae). The word "Kartoffel" (in the 17th century still Tartuffel) is derived from tartufolo, the Italian word for truffle, which in turn is derived from the Latin terrae tuber. The seeds are formed in tomato-like berries, which, like all green parts of the plant and the sprouts of the tuber, are slightly toxic to humans. Worldwide, about 376 million tons of potatoes are harvested annually. The potato is one of the world's most important foods, but it is also used as animal feed and industrial raw material. The potatoes cultivated today are descended from various land varieties found in the Andes from western Venezuela to Argentina and the island of Chiloé or the Chonos Archipelago in southern Chile. On Chiloé, the oldest known traces of wild potatoes have been found, their age is estimated at 13,000 years. The Chilean landraces, however, are probably descended from the Peruvian Andean varieties, which probably developed after hybridization with the wild species Solanum tarijense. This wild species can be found in Bolivia and Argentina. In Peru, long considered the country of origin of the potato, there are again more than 3,000 endemic potato varieties. Most of them can only be cultivated in the Peruvian Andes because they do not thrive in other parts of the world due to their geological and climatic requirements. The main difference between the Andean potato and the varieties cultivated in other growing areas is that the potato is adapted to different light conditions (day and night cycle). It is estimated that the potato was domesticated by Andean settlement cultures as early as 8000 years ago. In the Chibcha languages it was called iouza or iomui; among the Chono on Chiloé the plant was called aquina. In Quechua, the language of the Inca Empire, the name papa prevailed, which replaced the pre-Incan names among the peoples subjugated by the Incas and has been preserved in the Spanish of the entire South American, Caribbean and Canary Islands until today. The Aymara spoken in present-day Bolivia used the names amka and choque; in the Atacama region the potato was called chusli. The durable and easily transportable chuño obtained from the potato is described as the foodstuff central to the development of the Andean region, which enabled the emergence of pre-Columbian Andean advanced civilizations such as that of Tiwanaku and the Incas. When, how and by whom the potato came to Europe is still not exactly clear. On its way from South America to Spain, the potato made a stopover on the (Spanish) Canary Islands. This is known because in November 1567 three barrels containing potatoes, oranges and green lemons were shipped from Gran Canaria to Antwerp, and in 1574 two barrels of potatoes were shipped from Tenerife via Gran Canaria to Rouen. Assuming that at least five years were necessary to obtain enough potatoes to become an export article, the naturalization of the plant in the Canary Islands took place in 1562 at the latest. The earliest record of the potato in Spain is found in the books of the Hospital de la Sangre in Seville, which purchased potatoes in 1573. It is assumed that the potato reached Spain no earlier than 1564/65 and no later than 1570, otherwise the botanist Clusius, who travelled the country in 1564 in search of new plants, would probably have noticed it. From Spain, the potato reached Italy and then slowly spread to the European mainland. The potato is said to have reached the British Isles without the detour via Spain. It is not known who brought the potato there. In any case, it was not Francis Drake, probably not Walter Raleigh or Thomas Harriot, names that are repeatedly mentioned in this context. The potato was first documented in England in the catalog of plants cultivated by the botanist John Gerard in his garden in Holborn, published in London in 1596. In the same year Caspar Bauhin gave the potato the scientific name Solanum tuberosum. In Europe, the potato was often imported as a purely ornamental plant because of its beautiful flowering and lush foliage, and was included in botanical gardens as a rare plant. In the middle of the 17th century it appeared in the Netherlands, Italy and Burgundy. In Germany, the first potatoes are said to have been cultivated in Pilgramsreuth (Rehau), Upper Franconia, during the reign of Ferdinand III in 1647. In Seitenstetten Abbey in Lower Austria, the Benedictine abbot Caspar Plautz wrote a cookbook with potato recipes, which was published in Linz as early as 1621. Margrave Christian Ernst (Brandenburg-Bayreuth) is also regarded as the first German prince to introduce potato growing in his country; however, the farmers were not prepared to do so. Large-scale cultivation began in Lancashire in 1684, Saxony in 1716, Scotland in 1728, Prussia in 1738 and France in 1783.
