In combinatorics and group theory, a cyclic permutation, or cycle in short, is a permutation that exchanges certain elements of a set in a circle and holds the others. The first element of the cycle is mapped to the second, the second element to the third, and so on until the last element is mapped to the first again. Cyclic permutations have a number of special properties. For example, the concatenation of two cyclic permutations is commutative if they have disjunctive carriers. The inverse permutation of a cyclic permutation is always also cyclic. Furthermore, arbitrary powers of a cyclic permutation whose length is a prime number result in cyclic permutations again. The cyclic permutations of fixed length also form conjugation classes of the symmetric group of all permutations. Each cyclic permutation can be broken down into individual transpositions and therefore has an even sign exactly when its length is odd. Each permutation can in turn be written as a concatenation of disjunct cycles in pairs, which is used in the cycle writing of permutations. The order of a permutation then corresponds to the smallest common multiple of the lengths of these cycles. Cyclic permutations with large cycle lengths play an important role in the construction of pseudo-random number generators.
