Vasodilatation can be induced both actively, for example when the vascular muscles relax, and passively, for example by increasing blood volume. The interaction between nerves and muscles during active vasodilation and vasoconstriction is known as vasomotor function. Disorders of the system of vasodilation and vasoconstriction identified by Richard Cassirer around 1911 are referred to as vasomotor disorders. Vasodilation occurs mainly in response to changes in the concentration of nitric oxide. The release of histamine, for example as part of an allergic reaction, dilates the peripheral blood vessels, recognisable by a reddening of the skin. Most relaxation methods (e.g. autogenic training) attempt to actively induce vasodilation. This is mainly responsible for the relaxation effect. Vasodilatation and vasoconstriction of cerebral vessels are considered to be the main causes of migraine headaches. Vasodilation is one of the mechanisms that interact in anaphylactic shock. Vasodilatation promotes angiogenesis. In pharmacology, a vasodilator is any vasodilating drug used to treat functional and organic diseases. The dilatation takes place peripherally (directly) or centrally (indirectly). A distinction is made between dilators with a predominantly venous effect and those with a predominantly arterial effect. However, most vasodilators have both venous and arterial vasoactivity, i.e. they reduce preload and afterload. They reduce peripheral resistance by relaxing the smooth vascular muscles. Cardiac output is the quotient of blood pressure and peripheral resistance. Because this peripheral resistance is in the denominator, vasodilators increase cardiac output, thus improving ventricular function and therefore heart failure. Only if a simultaneous reduction in blood pressure is overcompensatory and greater than the intended reduction in resistance will the cardiac output also be reduced. ACE inhibitors, for example, are used for cardioprotection. This is referred to as relieving therapy with vasodilatants. Vasodilators can even be prescribed for aortic valve insufficiency. Therapeutic vasodilation can increase blood flow to poorly perfused regions. An improvement in skin perfusion can be helpful in peripheral arterial occlusive disease, for example. In arteriosclerotic veins, however, the effect is only slight. Their therapeutic effect in cerebral circulatory disorders (used as a nootropic agent) is controversial. Nitrates cause vasodilation of the blood vessels and arteries in the periphery; nitrate headaches often occur as a side effect. Undesirable side effects of vasodilators generally include angina pectoris, headaches, a drop in blood pressure, tachycardia and fluid retention. Relative contraindications include heart valve stenosis and hypertrophic cardiomyopathies. Endogenous substances and drugs that cause vasodilation are termed vasodilators. Such vasoactivity is necessary for homeostasis (keeping the body running normally). The main cause of red eyes after consuming cannabis is tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive component of the plant. Once THC enters the body, it acts as a vasodilator, which means that it dilates the blood vessels and increases blood flow. As a result, the blood vessels in the eyes become larger, which leads to increased blood flow and causes reddening of the eyes. Although this effect is temporary and harmless, it can vary in severity depending on the dose and individual sensitivity. In addition to the vasodilatory effect of THC, cannabis can also reduce intraocular pressure. This is particularly relevant for people with glaucoma, an eye disease in which increased intraocular pressure can lead to vision loss. Although the blood pressure-lowering properties of THC can be seen as a potential benefit in this context, it is important to listen to a doctor's instructions when treating glaucoma and not rely solely on cannabis. It is worth noting that not every cannabis user is affected by red eye to the same extent. Individual differences, such as sensitivity to THC, play a role here. In addition, the THC content of the cannabis strain consumed can also influence the extent of redness. Strains with a high THC content tend to have stronger vasodilatory effects and are therefore more likely to cause red eyes than strains with a lower THC content. Although red eyes after cannabis use are usually harmless and temporary, they can be uncomfortable or disturbing for some people. One of the main reasons for this is that they are a visible sign that someone has consumed cannabis. In situations where discretion is required or the use of cannabis is not accepted, this can cause social embarrassment or discomfort. In addition, redness of the eyes may also be accompanied by dryness, burning or itching in some people. These symptoms may be due to the drying effects of cannabis, known as 'dry eye' or 'cottonmouth'. While these side effects are usually mild and go away on their own, they can still be uncomfortable and interfere with the enjoyment of the cannabis experience.
