Contemporary, abstract painting, which in monochromatic form with metallic optics is intended to represent the physical phenomenon of pressure on surfaces. In physics, pressure is the result of a force F acting perpendicularly on a surface A, see picture. The pressure on a plane surface can be mathematically expressed as a quotient p = F/A (P=Pressure / F= Magnitude of normal force / A= Area of the surface on contact). The pressure on a body is positive when the force is directed towards it, a negative pressure corresponds to a pull. According to Pascals principle (by Blaise Pascal), pressure spreads in resting liquids and gases (fluids) on all sides and acts in the volume in all directions but always perpendicularly on walls. The usual formula symbol p is based on the Latin or English word for pressure (Latin - pressio). Pressure is an intensive, scalar physical quantity that plays an important role in fluid mechanics and thermodynamics in particular. The ratio of force to area is more precisely mechanical pressure, which is a normal stress (a special case of mechanical stress) acting equally in all directions in space. The thermodynamic pressure is a state variable which is defined for a gas by an equation of state, and can deviate from the mechanical pressure in an imbalance. The Pauli principle of quantum physics leads to a degeneration pressure in fermions, which for example prevents a white dwarf star from further collapse. According to the general theory of relativity, pressure also contributes to the gravitational effect. The spatial dependence of pressure is often referred to as pressure field, because pressure is a scalar field. In ancient times Archimedes, Ctesibius, Philon of Byzantium, Heron of Alexandria and Sextus Iulius Frontinus were already familiar with the effect of the pressure of water and air. In the Middle Ages, Alhazen should be mentioned, who had a correct idea of air pressure before the Dutch merchant Simon Stevin (1548-1620) formulated the first principles of hydrostatics and the hydrostatic paradox in the Renaissance. Fundamental research work began in the 17th century at the court of Grand Duke Cosimo II de Medici. There, the fountain master was astonished to discover that he could lift water no higher than 32 feet (10.26 m) using a suction pump. Above the water column an airless space was formed which prevented further rising. This phenomenon was communicated to the teacher and court mathematician Cosimos II, Galileo Galilei, who subsequently treated it in his Discorsi. Vincenzo Viviani, one of Galileos collaborators, was the first to conclude in 1643 that it is the air pressure that pushes up the water in the suction tube. Evangelista Torricelli, Galileos assistant and successor, made experiments with a mercury-filled tube as shown in the picture and explained from the different density of water and mercury why the former 13½ rises times higher than the latter at 760 mm. This is how Torricelli invented the mercury barometer. The news of the "Italian experiment" came to Blaise Pascal in 1644 via Marin Mersenne and the physicist Pierre Petit. He repeated Torricellis experiments and concluded that the pressure in a liquid or gas is proportional to depth. Accordingly, if the mercury column is supported by atmospheric pressure, its height on a mountain must be less than in the valley. Petit and Pascals brother-in-law Florin Périer carried out the corresponding measurements in Clermont-Ferrand and on the summit of the 1465-metre-high Puy de Dôme on 19 September 1648 and received the expected results. Already in October, Pascal published his results as a report of the great experiment on the equilibrium of liquids (Pascal: Récit de la grande expérience de léquilibre des liqueurs). In his 1653 treatise on the equilibrium of liquids and the weight of the mass of air, Pascal formulated, among other things, Pascals principle according to which pressure in liquids at rest spreads out on all sides and always acts vertically in the volume in all directions but on walls, Pascals law for hydrostatic pressure, which increases linearly with depth and the working principle of a new machine to multiply forces (Pascal: machine nouvelle pour multiplier les forces), i.e. the hydraulic press.
