A.P.Polo - "Baphomet 2.0" - Hamburg (Germany) - New Media Art / Digital painting. Contemporary work that uses abstract geometry to transpose Éliphas Lévis 1854 depiction of Baphomet into the modern context of the digital age. The name Baphomet or Bafomet was used in southern French protocols of the Templar process to refer to a symbol supposedly worshipped by the Knights Templar. The origin of the symbol is unknown. The Baphomet figure was represented with a white beard and two red gems as eyes. While modern scholars and the Oxford English Dictionary state that the origin of the name Baphomet was a probable Old French version of "Mahomet", alternative etymologies have also been proposed. Text comparisons with contemporary Provençal literature showed that the spelling Baffomet was only used in the process protocols from the Provençal-speaking area. Baffomet was the Provençal word for the Prophet Mohammed, or rather for the alleged idol, which was attributed to the Muslims in some chansons de geste. For example, the "Gods Bafum/Bafumet et Travagan" and Mohammed as their emissary can be found in the Provençal poem about the life of the Holy Honorat, completed in 1300. In the chanson Simon de Pouille, written before 1235, one speaks of a Saracen idol called "Bafumetz", and already the chronicler of the First Crusade, Raimund dAigulhers, calls the mosques "Bafumarias". Already in 1098 Anselm von Ribemont had written in a letter from Antioch that the attacking Muslims had called on their God "Baphometh". The historical foundation of the Baphomet can be found in the protocols drawn up during the Templar process. One of the articles of indictment in the 1307 trial of the Templars was that the friars "worshipped an idol". During the various proceedings of the trial, few witnesses confessed to such worship. The descriptions vary. For example, according to Larchant, the prosecutions minutes of the trial mention an "idol as a head with a beard", which the Templars supposedly worshipped. Some declared it to be a black statue, others as a head with two or three faces or even as a four-footed figure. The term baffomet appears here only in some protocols recorded in the South of France. Neither proof of actual worship nor an existing idol of the baphomet was found. The statements in the protocols diverge in such a way that it is not yet possible to find any evidence for the existence and form of the baphomet. Moreover, these statements were often forced under torture. Since 1854, the name Baphomet has been associated with the "Sabbatic Goat" image drawn by Éliphas Lévi, which contains binary elements representing the "symbolization of the equilibrium of opposites" (e.g. half-human and half-animal, male and female, good and evil, on and off, etc.). On one hand, Lévis intention was to symbolize his concept of balance that was essential to his magnetistic notion of the Astral Light; on the other hand, the Baphomet represents a tradition that should result in a perfect social order. The magician and occult writer Éliphas Lévi Zahed drew Baphomet for the first time in the 19th century as a demon with a horned goats head, female breasts and a pentagram on the forehead. His depiction originated from various much older deities of pagan origin. Horned fertility gods can be found in ancient Egypt and in Celtic representations. Corresponding arm positions and torch symbolism can be found in the Mithras cult in the twin brothers Cautes and Cautopates, the personified boyish symbols of morning and evening, life and death with raised or lowered torch. Several concrete sources for Lévis Baphomet can also be identified, such as the famous androgynous in Heinrich Khunraths Amphitheatrum sapientiae aeternae (1595), a print in an edition of Clovis Hesteau de Nuysements Traittez de lharmonie et constitution generalle du vray sel and, above all, the map Le Diable in the Tarot de Marseille (around 1500). Furthermore, visually similar representations of the devil or demons have been omnipresent since early modern times. It has been pointed out that Lévis Baphomet must be seen in the historical context of early socialism, romanticism and magnetism. On the one hand, he stands for an alleged tradition of true religion, which extended from the late classical school of Alexandria to Gnostics, Templars, Cathars and other heretics and contemporary socialists. On the other hand, it is a symbolic expression of Lévis magical-magnetistic theory of astral light. Lévis Baphomet is the source of the later tarot image of the Devil in the Rider-Waite design. The concept of a downward-pointing pentagram on its forehead was enlarged upon by Lévi in his discussion (without illustration) of the Goat of Mendes arranged within such a pentagram, which he contrasted with the microcosmic man arranged within a similar but upright pentagram. The actual image of a goat in a downward-pointing pentagram first appeared in the 1897 book La Clef de la Magie Noire, written by the French occultist Stanislas de Guaita. It was this image that was later adopted as the official symbol—called the Sigil of Baphomet—of the Church of Satan, and continues to be used among Satanists. Baphomet, as Lévis illustration suggests, has occasionally been portrayed as a synonym of Satan or a demon, a member of the hierarchy of Hell. Baphomet appears in that guise as a character in James Blishs The Day After Judgment. Christian evangelist Jack T. Chick claimed that Baphomet is a demon worshipped by Freemasons, a claim that apparently originated with the Taxil hoax. Léo Taxils elaborate hoax employed a version of Lévis Baphomet on the cover of Les Mystères de la franc-maçonnerie dévoilés, his lurid paperback "exposé" of Freemasonry, which in 1897 he revealed as a hoax intended to ridicule the Catholic Church and its anti-Masonic propaganda.
