A.P.Polo - "Microchiroptera" - Hamburg (Germany) - New Media Art /Digital painting. Contemporary work representing a bat in an abstract, colourful way. The bats (Microchiroptera) are a group of mammals that, together with the flying foxes (Megachiroptera), form the order of bats (Chiroptera). This order includes the only mammals and, besides birds, the only vertebrates that can actively fly. There are about 1000 bat species worldwide; there are 6399 mammal species in total. Bats are found almost all over the world, on all continents of the earth except Antarctica. They are also absent in other polar regions and on remote islands. On some islands (e.g. New Zealand) they were the only mammals until the arrival of man. The bat genus of the mouse-eared bat (Myotis) is the most widespread mammalian species without human influence. Also very widespread are the bulldog bats (Molossidae) and the smooth nosed free tails (Emballonuridae). About 40 species are common in Europe, of which almost 30 are also found in Central Europe.
