Swamp Creature by HH Photography of Florida. A very large, very prehistoric looking American Alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) crawls out of the murky waters of Lake Myakka to rest on the grassy lake banks in the late light of day. Gators were at one time listed as an endangered species but have rebounded due to conservation efforts and are now of Least Concern. Found mostly in the Southeastern United States, alligators inhabit swamps and other fresh water lakes, rivers and streams from Virginia to south Florida and east to Texas. Photographed in Myakka River State Park, Florida, and enhanced with textures for an artistic effect.
