A grotto (Italian grotta cave, later vault) is a cavity of small size, which may have been created by nature or by man and has a high degree of humidity. Originally natural cavities can be heavily overworked by man. Grottos created or modified by man are design elements of garden art. The exact differentiation of the terms filled geological, speleological and Germanic studies for decades and even today. In traditional linguistic usage, the term "cave" refers more to individual, usually small rooms with extremely rich contents (e.g. stalactites, shells, fossils), whereas the term "cave" usually refers to halls and corridors of greater dimensions. In a cave system, traditionally referred to in the plural as "grottoes", a single "grotto" is a hall; several of these halls in cave systems are connected by passages. It is not possible to define precisely the meaning of the terms "grotto" and "cave" because there are no uniform, generally binding definitions of the terms. In ancient times, natural caves and rock springs were considered the abode of nymphs and other chthonic beings. In Hellenism and Roman times, such sanctuaries were architecturally defined in the form of nymphaees, and were equipped with niches and sculptures. In late antiquity, however, installations were also created that merely "quoted" such mythological traditions and had a predominantly profane artistic character. In the Renaissance, the garden artistic elements of antiquity were taken up along with the world of gods. Already Leon Battista Alberti (1452) recommended laying out cool, damp grottos in gardens, and in the 16th to 17th centuries niches on lining walls, water arts and architecture lined with unhewn natural stone and shells were part of the fixed programme of larger gardens. In France the Italian models were soon imitated and further developed (Fontainebleau Castle, Versailles Castle). In the north, too, the grottos soon became part of the fixed repertoire of palace gardens (Hortus palatinus, Munich Residence, Hellbrunn near Salzburg). The idea of the grotto is always connected with the element of water; this reference to nature can be extended by romantic-religious concepts, mirrors (Giardino Giusti, Verona) and mysterious twilight can create magical-unreal ideas, they can be turned into mineralogical cabinets of rarities, treacherous water jokes in the immediate vicinity of the grottoes (example: water games Hellbrunn) serve to amuse the court society. The placement of the grottos is just as varied as the variety of types. As a wild, jagged imitation of nature, they can, placed on the border of the garden, lead over to the grown landscape. On the other hand, grotto elements are often integrated into the basements of palace buildings themselves and determine the character of the garden halls (examples: Pommersfelden, Schloss Wilhelmsthal, Neues Palais in Potsdam). Thus a grotto is either a structure built underground or at least appears to be underground, or a suitably decorated pavilion as part of the garden architecture. While garden theorists lost interest in grotto architecture in the early years of the 18th century, the specialist craftsmen known as grottiers continued to find work in garden practice until the end of the Rococo period. It is significant for their acceptance that since 1730 the grotto motifs have been transformed into rocaille, the asymmetrical, shell-like ornament of the Rococo period, which has spread to all decorative applications. Another important group of grottos are the Mariengrottos. Most of them go back to the Lourdes Grotto, an originally natural cave of small dimensions, hardly more than an overhanging rock. Marian Caves were artificially created as a result of the popularity of the Lourdes Caves worldwide.
