As long as I can remember since growing up in the Pacific Northwest (USA), I've had a deep love for the outdoors which ultimately translated into a career as a professional engineering geologist that led me across the country to my home in the Mid-Atlantic Region, on a 30 year adventure in the US and abroad. A parallel passion for photography was sparked after my father briefly gave me his camera as a child to take some pictures of the 1980 eruption of Mt. St. Helens and I saw the resulting prints of the photos I captured. The two passions have remained on equal footing ever since as natural partners. It’s nearly impossible not to look around, particularly while sitting at the top of a rock outcrop after a long day overlooking a grand vista, and not appreciate the beauty before you and your fortune being able to see it right there ; right then. I suppose I sit at that odd intersection of science and art.. sometimes, I simply let Mother Nature speak for herself without adding my narratives.. sometimes it’s the mood I pursue. I embrace both, but my goal is always to blend the two seamlessly.... Strive to capture the emotional essence of what inspired me to stop and photograph, and, capture moments and subjects that are authentic. ABOUT THIS ARTWORK: BLOOMING MONUMENT
In late March to early April, Washington DC transforms - particularly around the tidal basin when the cherry trees burst in blooms. It is never the same from year to year as there are so many factors that can affect peak bloom - even the color of the cherry blossoms. From year to year it is never the same.. sometimes the blossoms are very light in color and delicate, whereas during others (when weather conditions cooperate), the colors are startling, saturated, and robust. Ideally, the weather will warm a little just before what the National Park Service projects will be "peak bloom" and then a little cold snap will hit - not too cold, though, and not for an extended period of time... just a nice, brief cold snap and then back to warm (not hot) temperatures. This year the timing was almost perfect and the weather cooperated so that conditions were excellent. The cherry blossoms in 2026 were a sublime mixture of white to pink blossoms and there was a nice mixture of robust to delicate blossoms so that the peak bloom season was longer than usual. But, regardless, from year to year you can always expect a wonderful show. Bar none, my favorite time to visit is from just before dawn to just past sunrise before the visitors arrive; when the Tidal Basin is just waking up. Due to the delicate pastel colors and the image I might recommend you consider paper as the print media in satin or gloss finish, with a 1" mat (for an image greater than 24" in width or length, consider upsizing to a 2" mat to maintain balance), and blue or purple frame (frame model 701-046 is very a nice match); or, if you prefer a more vibrant finish, consider acrylic or HD metal as the print media.
