A.P.Polo - "Chick" - Hamburg (Germany) - Digital Art. Colourful, contemporary abstract representation of a chick. In ornithology, a chick is a young bird (freshly hatched to juvenile). Chicks are mostly characterized - similar to other young animals - by a clumsy looking body with an oversized head, large beak and large eyes. Depending on the species or subspecies, most chicks have a very differently coloured plumage, which is already formed in the egg. With the help of an egg tooth, they make their way outside, and in the first few days, because of their fullness (because of the egg yolk from which they hatched) they eat nothing. During hatching, the down feathers are surrounded by a thin layer of keratin, which tears and falls off when the chick dries after hatching. This gives the chick its typical fluffy appearance. However, this does not last long. The change of the down feather dress (moulting) against a first feather dress in the first weeks, gives the growing chick an unfinished, plucked appearance. As fully developed feathers no longer grow, many birds undergo further feather changes during the growth phase. The colouring of the original plumage often differs from that of the adult bird and usually has a camouflage function. Just as the nest colouring usually serves camouflage. A conspicuous light yellow plumage is the exception in chicks, but the use of light yellow chicken chicks as a "symbol of life" at Easter is the common association with the term chick in broad sections of the population.
