Sankofa: The Wisdom of the Past Strictly speaking, Sankofa is not a god or a deity in the traditional sense, but rather a powerful symbol and philosophical concept originating from the Akan people of Ghana. It is part of the Adinkra symbols, which are used to represent complex concepts, historical milestones, and proverbs. The Symbolism The term derives from the Akan words San (to return), ko (to go), and fa (to fetch, seek, and take). It is most commonly represented in two ways: The Mythical Bird: A bird with its feet firmly planted forward while its head is turned backwards to retrieve an egg from its back. The Stylized Heart: A symmetrical, heart-shaped design often seen in ironwork and textiles. The Philosophy and "Mythology" While not a god, the "mythology" of Sankofa is rooted in the belief that the past serves as a vital guide for the future. The Akan believe that time is not merely linear, but a continuous cycle where the spirits of ancestors remain present in the lives. The synthesis of these works is further defined by a collaborative process, bridging human vision with the frontiers of artificial intelligence. Each image in this series was meticulously developed through an iterative dialogue where AI served as Frank Pietronigro's creative partner, translating the artist's specific interdisciplinary concepts into visual form. At the core of this collaboration was a consistent directive to channel the intricate, surreal, and moral complexity of Hieronymus Bosch. By grounding the series in the aesthetic of Bosch—known for his dense, phantasmagoric landscapes and symbolic depth—the collection achieves a unique "Space-Baroque" quality. This approach transforms the global deities into complex, multi-layered icons that reflect both the wonder and the heavy psychological weight of our journey into the unknown.
