Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) refers to the search for extraterrestrial civilizations. Since 1960, various scientific projects have been carried out, which among other things examine the radio range of the electromagnetic spectrum for possible signs and signals of technical civilizations in space. The SETI research is based on the assumption that extraterrestrial civilizations exist in space and use similar communication systems and communication technologies as on Earth. So far it is not known whether extraterrestrial life exists or whether there are other technical civilizations capable of transmitting and receiving interstellar signals. The astronomer Frank Drake has tried to make an estimation with the Drake equation. If the factors of this equation are optimistically estimated, there is a possible number of more than 300 such civilizations in the Milky Way. Stephen Dole first estimated the number of possible habitable worlds in the Galaxy in a study for the RAND Corporation in 1964. The Kardashov scale is used to estimate possible technical possibilities of extraterrestrial civilizations. The galaxy in which the Earth is located, the Milky Way, has a diameter of about 200,000 light years and contains between 200 and 400 billion stars and - according to the findings of the Kepler mission - 50 billion planets, of which an estimated 500 million are in habitable zones. Further analysis of the Kepler data and investigations with the Keck telescope (as of 2013) suggest an even higher number of planets in habitable zones within the Milky Way.
