ABOUT THIS ARTWORK: SURFACE AND STILLNESS
The canvas reads like the inside of a private investigator’s notebook after a long rain-soaked night — every portrait a clue every splash of paint a weathered fingerprint. A riot of red and black anchors the scene white space is flecked with blue and crimson like spattered confetti or distant gunfire. The surface itself seems pitted and worn as if someone has been scraping secrets into it with the back of a knife. Top-left a woman in profile looks away her dark hair falling like a curtain. Her skin is porcelain against a bold red sleeve and the tilt of her chin carries an amused dangerous indifference. She could be hiding something behind that look or she could be bait. Below her another woman stares out directly heavy-lidded and composed her face is a study in controlled glamour — black hair framing angular cheekbones lips a deliberate smear of vermilion. She is all surface and stillness like an old photograph that refuses to fade. At center a man in a suit is caught mid-turn jaw shadowed gaze traveling out of the frame. His profile is clean but his jacket and the background are punctured by splatters of paint — blue like bruises red like accusations. Opposite him larger and more intrusive is a face that dominates the right-hand side: a man with something mechanical fixed across his mouth a small camera lens or black rectangle as if silence has been sealed by a machine. The impression is immediate and eerie — a figure whose voice has been rendered into imagery an enforced privacy that makes him both threatening and fragile. Between them the collage folds inwards: a narrow rectangle holds a woman in a red dress one hand brought up to her ear as if listening for a whispered alibi. Below her an arch-shaped vignette contains a miniature scene — two tiny silhouettes stand together dwarfed by a field of stars and crude childlike marks. It feels like a memory tucked into a locket a fragment that might explain everything or nothing. The composition is restless populated with circles and target-like motifs as though someone keeps aiming and missing at the same spot. Paint drips and spattered dots run between the images like veins binding the faces together into a single uneasy narrative. There is glamour here — old Hollywood in silhouette — but it’s been run through a noir grinder: tape stains and anonymous cinematic menace. You can almost hear the scratch of celluloid the whisper of secrets exchanged in back alleys and the slow inevitable slide toward some revelation that the painting refuses to give outright.
