ABOUT THIS ARTWORK: DISOBEDIENT PILES
Sunlight falls through a high rectangular window like a blade narrow and uncompromising. It cuts the small otherwise dim room into bands of white and shadow laying down a strip of warmth across a scatter of paper that covers the floor. The pages lie everywhere — a brittle chaotic carpet of sheets and envelopes printed blocks of type and hand-sketched marks mingled together. Some are curled at the corners some stacked in small disobedient piles a few photographs or postcards sit face down like secrets. Against the far wall stand tall upright panels and narrow boxes leaning as if they cannot quite decide to remain staunch or to slide away. On those panels thin precise lines rise like telephone poles and wire stark silhouettes against the pale ground their rhythm interrupted by smudges and brushstrokes that suggest a hand that once worked with care and then fled. A low crate and a pile of boxes cluster beneath them half-open the rims catching the light and throwing thin highlights across the pages on the floor. Everywhere there is a sense of interruption. A single pair of gloves perhaps or a darkened stamp rests amid the sheets — artifacts of action abruptly ceased. The emptiness around the window amplifies the hush no figure occupies the frame yet the room hums with the echo of a presence. Dust motes float in the beam small planets in a still cosmos and the contrast between the luminous rectangle of the window and the saturated shadow around it gives the setting the charged suspense of a room waiting for a footstep. Look closer and you can imagine the story of what happened here: a flurry of letters poured out plans unfolded and fanned messages hurriedly annotated and abandoned. The papers suggest voices — urgent typographic proclamations penciled notes that loop and break — and the tall panels with their rigid lines feel like signposts for a path that no longer exists. The light finds the most important things first as if the room itself is jury and the beam a pointing finger. It is both intimate and public a private archive that has spilled into a tribunal of light. The overall scene is monochrome muted as an old photograph which makes the scattered documents look like the aftermath of a confession or the residue of a long conversation. You sense arrival and departure at once: someone has been here left in a hurry left much behind and yet the space remains full of narrative — a half-finished sentence pressed flat on the floor the suggestion of correspondence unresolved and a silence thick enough to hold stories that the light for a moment insists on revealing.
