The moon hangs like a coin of burnished gold so close it might spill warmth across the water and its circle dissolves the shore into silver and shadow. A young woman sits half turned on a mossy stone at the water’s edge her skin catching the moonlight like frost on milk she is at once vulnerable and elemental as if someone had sculpted dusk into flesh. Her gaze drifts away from us not toward any single point but into the small private distance where memory and longing meet. She is unclothed yet the painting is not about exposure so much as about presence. A spray of daisies and autumn leaves settles delicately between her thighs and at her hair a tiny wing like a feathered secret is tucked behind one ear. Necklaces hang against her chest — simple medals or charms whose meanings the night keeps — and a faint almost invisible dusting of butterflies and petals clings to her thighs and the stone beneath her as if the shoreline itself had begun to adorn her. Beyond her the lake is a black mirror. Figures rise from its far bank like myths remembering themselves: a seated pair another solitary silhouette each blurred into legend by moonlight and distance. A single small moth hovers in the air near her shoulder its motion a punctuation in the long slow sentence the evening writes.
