She sits like a punctuation mark against a room that seems to have been painted from memory — not a faithful sketch of walls and floor so much as the idea of a room: teal panels that ripple with the artist’s hand a narrow strip of yellow at the left that might be an open door or a sunlit wall and a blood-red carpet streaked with stubborn brushstrokes. The woman at the center is both studied and surrendered to the canvas: red hair coiled in loose defiant spirals skin worked in warm pearled strokes of peach and rose a face that reads like the end of a sentence — resigned and expectant at once.
