ABOUT THIS ARTWORK: STUBBORN MEMORIES
She stands like a punctuation mark against a weathered wall of color — a sentinel in a strapless black dress pale arm hanging like a question at her side. Her profile is severe and simple: a straight nose a long black braid or fall of hair a single painted red cheek that reads like an echo of the two red spheres that float nearby. Around her the world is a collage of squares and rubbed paint the surface scarred with seams and thin cracks as if the scene has been assembled from old maps and stubborn memories. The left side of the canvas is a geometric hush — small blocks of blue orange and cream arranged almost like a chessboard their edges softened by grime and time. To the right a broad swath of sun-faded yellow bleeds into a charcoal blue and into that sky hang three planets: a great red disc majestic and slightly off-center a tiny black dot as if a dropped thought and a smaller red bead perched on a narrow table. The large red circle feels like a sun or a wound its color raw and certain commands the eye and sets the rhythm of the composition. She looks neither at the sun nor at the bead on the table her gaze is turned away private and contained. The vertical line of her body slices through the horizontal geometry of the room an ordered interruption—humanity in a mathematical world. Her skin is alabaster against the saturated blocks and the single red blush at her cheek seems to be both a mark of defiance and the only warm light she carries within. There’s a stillness about her that is not empty it’s expectant like someone who has learned to keep a secret and to wait for the strange orbiting things to decide their alignment. The textures tell another story: scraped paint layered color the way the blue has been weathered to a softer grey at the margins the rust where the red meets the ground. Those imperfections read like the ledger of time pages turned and glued back into place. The tiny black circle — so precise and stubborn — is a counterpoint to the generous red sun a small grief or a retained memory that refuses to be reconciled.
