ABOUT THIS ARTWORK: SECRET GEOGRAPHIES
You step into a room that has been rearranged into a private continent. The gallery lights have been softened into a noon that never quite settles sending long articulate shadows across an inland sea made not of water but of glass and resin — a braided turquoise ribbon that snakes through the floor. It catches the light like a memory streaked with luminous swirls and tiny bubbles that suggest movement even where nothing moves. The river’s edges are lined with paint-smudged sand and meticulous pebbles as if someone has tried to convince the earth to hold a coastline inside a museum. Low mounds of ochre sand rise like hesitant hills. Some are smoothed into gentle dunes others are sharp enough to be mistaken for small volcanoes. In one place a cairn of river-worn stones is balanced with impossible patience each rock a punctuation mark in a slow deliberate language. Nearby a pyramid of white sits pristine and modern a counterpoint to a rusted globe-like shell riddled with holes — an artifact that looks equal parts meteorite and abandoned kettle. The globe’s perforations let light in inside dark cavities suggest secret geographies. Across the room mountains are draped in stitched fabric their peaks folded and tied like wrapped gifts. The cloth is patchwork — creams and ochres bunched and lashed into topography — and it reads both like shelter and wound dressing. Between these textile ranges small tents and angular forms create a transient village. Scattered among them are objects that belong to different stories: a bright red apple sits improbably clean in dusty sand a coil of driftwood suggests tides that no longer exist and a tiny stack of bones or twigs hints at rituals or childrens games. Television screens stand like totems. They glow with static or flicker with images their blue light spilling onto the floor and making the resin river look deeper more alive. On the walls projections throw larger ghosted versions of the same scene — shapes of peaks and ripples that repeat and smear as if the landscape cannot help but echo itself. The space hums: the faint electricity of screens the whisper of air handlers high above and an almost inaudible susurration that might be the imagined sound of waves or the audience’s collective breath. Everything here feels staged and unearthed at once like a diorama excavated from the future. There is a sense of someone’s slow work: built cairns mounded sands fabric tied with care objects deliberately placed to direct the eye. Yet disorder seeps in — sand spilling over into pathways a bowl tipped onto its side fingerprints on a television screen.
