ABOUT THIS ARTWORK: DRIFT OF CLOUDS
The scene opens like a dream someone folded out of geometry and paint. At the center floats a broad square plateau whose surface is a perfect checkerboard—black and white squares stretching to the edges then curling into zebra?striped dunes that rise and fall like frozen waves. Around that main island smaller slabs hover at different heights their undersides dripping with a riot of pigments as if someone had poured an artist’s palette beneath each rock and left it to harden in midair. Clouds press up against their bases soft and milky so the landmasses look like islands cut from a different sky. Above and around these islands the air is a gallery of patterns: concentric bull’s-eyes planted flat against planes and floors hypnotic spirals that pulse outward and strict grids that align with nothing in particular. A checkerboard tile gives way to a crisp white grid which dissolves into bands of vertical black-and-white stripes and then into a small patchwork of primaries—red yellow blue—like a scrap of modernist painting pinned into the atmosphere. A single solid red disc hovers high a sun that is less heat than command while smaller yellow and blue orbs punctuate the sky like punctuation marks. Strands of white light stitch the scene together taut as harp strings and converging toward distant points. Along these luminous lines glide tiny house-like vessels—sleek improbable craft with gull wings and cabin windows—shuttling between the floating plates as if they were commuters on a route mapped by light. The perspective is engineered to trick the eye: some islands retreat into a vanishing point of shimmering lines others loom so close the bull’s-eye patterns on their tops feel like trapdoors for the unwary. Textures collide: the hard geometry of squares and circles against the soft drift of clouds the flatness of graphic prints against the sculpted almost living curves of striped hills. Color is both restrained and extravagant—monochrome surfaces sit beside saturated edges where magenta teal and tangerine seep from under stone. Every plane seems to insist on two truths at once: orderly design and impossible buoyancy. Walking through this image with your eyes you feel a kind of spatial vertigo that is also an invitation. The rules here are ornamental but persuasive gravity is a suggestion and the horizon keeps folding back on itself. It reads like a map someone made to guide you through a mind rather than a country—clear signs point the way targets mark destinations and the white threads promise passage. At the far edge where stripes meet sky and checkerboards fade into distance you can almost imagine a next plateau appearing—another puzzle another combination of pattern and color—waiting for the moment your curiosity chooses to leap.
